Nice to have it in kindle format. I had the paperback and misplaced it. It is very topical today with the exact story as it is happening for real. I won’t give it away. But it is a good read. The only negative is that the charts and maps are mid rotated. Also they are reproduced too small and cannot be magnified.

Only small "fault" was the single US Submarine active most of the time. Much easier than keeping interest with a flock of subs sharing the action.

While SSN might not satisfy some pure techno thriller readers as it is based on a computer game of the same name, which naturally means that the hero ship of the game and novel, the U.S.S. Cheyenne works its way through more than 60 Chinese ships and submarines, it is nevertheless an enjoyable work by Clancy. Seeing the Chinese not being 10 feet tall militarily in the near future makes it very enjoyable.

Of course it's not just the Cheyenne that blasts through the Chinese fleet with near total impunity but the Independence Carrier Battle Group as well.

All in all definitely recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. Although there was a lot of technical language, the events of the story unfold in way that really allows you to visualize what it would look like in a movie. Great character development of Capt. Mackey...would love to see this movie...if were to ever be made!

Clancy was one of those authors that I found to be all over the map as far as the reads go. Some, like The Hunt For Red October were hallmarks in my mind. Most of the action was based on the two submarines. Contrast that with Sum of all Fears which switches scenes every two pages. This book tends to stick with the goings on of one submarine and crew or should I say the captain and the XO because not one other character is really fleshed out at all.

Three stars and really closer to two is that this book is far too simplistic. While some of his are overly complex this book is the polar opposite. Within the space of ten pages the sub goes out and sinks 3,4,5 ships. Returns to resupply and repeats this phenomenal success....again and again. I'll admit I am only about 2/3rds in but I would not be surprised if this apex predator does not sink 50 ships by the end. For readers of Clancy, not the franchise because I don't even consider them Clancy, you will not be disappointed in his use of military abbreviations. Sometimes 6-10 per page!

Such is the fate of authors that have spoiled us with their early works.

Unlike any other Clancy book I've ever red. It is like a narrative of one single submarine. Never the less, it is a decent book.

If you are looking for the typical "Tom Clancy" novel this is not it. This is more how attack submarines are used, what missions they can preform and what problems they face. These are illustrated as stories in a limited war with China as the bad guy with Russia in the background. In some ways it reads more like a collection of short stories than a novel. I personally enjoyed it a great deal. It brought back a lot of memories of a few friends and there stories from being on "boomers".

I read Tom Clancy's book, "SSN" several years ago, and enjoyed it very much. Little did I know I'd be re-reading it and sharing it with my daughter. My grandson (her son) is in the midst of training at the Navy's submarine school on the East Coast. I think the combination of fact and fiction makes it one of Mr. Clancy's more memorable books - full of excitement. His writing allows me to see everything with the mind's eye and, with his writing, experience all the activities aboard the mighty USS Cheyenne during action in the Pacific.

1.0 out of 5 stars Noioso e ripetitivo - altro che Ottobre Rosso
Reviewed in Italy on February 24, 2014

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read - an old favourite

Not Clancy's best by a long shot (I think it's a narrative of a submarine computer war game that Clancy helped develop), and the second hand copy I purchased had biro scrawl over a few pages at the back.... but still worth a read (especially if you manage to buy it at a good discount).

4.0 out of 5 stars CLANCY T., a Strategy Guide to Submarine Warfare
Reviewed in Germany on February 24, 2013
A Strategy Guide to Submarine Warfare - so this book is ment to be a guide for a submarine warfare computer simulation. It shows the abilities of an US-submarine in the last century within an fictive story that might came true - see actual quarrels concerning Senkaku / Diaoyu islands - nothing more, but nothing less.
It is well done - showing the technical capabilities of submarine system at the end of 20th century - comparing to "Silent Hunter" - a leap from WWII to the edge of the next century. This book explains basics for submarine "dummies" in an eloquent way. Anybody seeking for "Hunt Red MAO" has to realize - this is the wrong "movie".
Apart from minor "blurrings" and few expenable passages written just for proud US-Citizens, the book presents a multitude of additional information (interview, glossary, bibliography) for submarine fans.
