For people who want to know what Tom Cruise is really like in person this is a must read. You will look at him through different eyes when you watch his movies. He talks about his dyslexia as a child and also says that he was made to write with his right hand when he wanted to use his left. His former teachers meet the actor's grievances with disbelief. Both Pennyann Styles, who taught him at Robert Hopkins Public School, and special-needs teacher Asta Arnot emphatically reject these claims. Styles, who is left-handed herself, was a self-confessed "zealot" about helping lefties to write as they wished--even bringing left-handed scissors to school. She recalls that from the age of eight he was placed in a special-education class as he was assessed by an educational psychologist, who diagnosed him as having a learning disability. The author discusses how many Scientologists have expressed how it cured them of some illness, etc. Many years after Tom Cruise joined, he explained that Scientology, in particular Hubbard's "Study Tech," had helped cure his dyslexia. There is evidence to suggest that this claim had more to do with his proselytizing mission on behalf of his faith than with the objective reality of his early life. Over the years Tom has given two differing accounts of his battle to overcome dyslexia. His first version, before his conversion to Scientology, credits his iron will and his mother's help for enabling him to learn to read. Indeed, in 1985 he was happy to receive an award at the White House from Nancy Reagan for his efforts to raise global awareness of the learning disorder. After he joined the Church of Scientology in 1986, the story changed.Read more ›

I suspect that the reason that this book is titled as 'An Unauthorized Biography' is that it probably reveals more truths about Tom Cruise than he'd prefer. When the movie "Billy Bathgate" was being filmed, one of it's stars, Nicole Kidman and Cruise were becoming a fairly new couple. Cruise came down to visit/be with Ms. Kidman. The daughter of one of my co-workers at the time, worked in a variety store in a small town close to where the movie was being made. She offered to help a customer in the store not knowing at the time that the customer was none other than Tom Cruise. He whirled around and told her that 'when I need your help, you'll know it.' Apparently that megawatt smile of his is only reserved for the red carpet and big time movie premiers.......because it's as fake as he is. Whether he knows it or not, he's being used and made to look like the fool that he is by the Church of Scientology.

I bought this book after reading two biographies about women that had escaped Scientology. In those books, they made reference to the influence of Mr Cruise on promoting the religion, so I was interested to know how he got sucked into it to begin with (via #1 Wife Mimi it turns out), and this book does a good job of explaining how it all unfolded.

But this book really should really be titled 'The Wives of Tom Cruise' because, aside from a relatively small front section about his early home life, most of the book is about the women he's married and divorced, and those he's tried to marry, and how one (#1 Wife Mimi) got him into Scientology, and then the next two (#2 Nicole, #3 Katie) escaped the marriage because of the religion (an interesting side point is that Nicole and Katie are both Catholics, and after divorcing Mr Cruise they both seemed to run back to their RC faith - so Scientology seemed to have the effect of not replacing other religions but making the wives realise that their RC faith was perhaps a good thing after all).

While the Katie marriage hasn't been updated to reflect latest events (the divorce), it does give a scathing account of the impact of Scientology on her personality etc and how she changed because of being introduced to it (basically became a worse version of her originally bubbly self). Personally, I would have liked more inside info about what went wrong in the Nicole marriage - not much in the book that hasn't already been published in the tabloids, so there wasn't a great deal of new stuff on that one. The stuff about adopting the kids is interesting - all tied into Scientology of course - but there's virtually nothing on Suri (not that I cared to be honest), but that would seem important given this is a biography.

Wanting to read this for a long time I got this as as new CD audio at a good price. Much to my surprise the book makes it pretty clear Cruse was not gay. However reporting Cruse's dealings with Scientology are clearly what upset Cruse and strange so called church of Scientology. Many consider Scientology a sick and dangerous mind control cult doing more harm than good to anyone except the upper level privileged members who lead a life of luxury. Books like "Beyond Belief" and "going clear" point out the near slavery and unethical practices of this so called church. Knowing that the actions of Cruse become despicable; . One can only guess what Cruse was thinking, or if they were "his" thoughts, when he used his fame to became the political voice of Scientology in the strange and erratic way he did so..

This book is well written and an excellent ant account/bio of Cruses early life, his first movies, and his career . . that, like many rising stars, clearly got a boost from Scientology
