Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Premiere Volume with Bonus Disc (DVD)
Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Premiere Volume The Tom-and-Jerry legacy chases through every nook and cranny of the classic animation pantheon, spanning six decades and several famous directors. Looney Tunes icons Friz Freleng, Tex Avery and Chuck Jones all played their part. But the enduring cat-and-mouse team was the brainchild of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Their first short Puss Gets the Boot (in which Tom was called Jasper) was released with little fanfare. Fellow animators did not consider a cat-pursuing-mouse scenario too exciting or original. But when unleashed on exhibitors and audiences, their hilariously diabolical rivalry delighted everyone. Tom & Jerry Kids Show Bonus Disc: Spend some time with the beloved animated duo in their furry, formative years in Tom & Jerry Kids Show. These delightful adventures follow the kitten and baby mouse as they taunt each other and create mayhem like only young ones can. Joined by their pals Droopy, Dripple, Spike and Tyke, Tom and Jerry bring on the giggles and good times in episodes such as Toys Will Be Toys, Bat Mouse, Cosmic Chaos and The Maltese Poodle.]]>

I've purchased all 3 volumes of the Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection as well as the Chuck Jones DVD. That covers all of the episodes other than the Gene Deitch episodes and supposedly 2 or 3 others that are so racially charged that they have been censured from existence.
All are labeled as being for adults because some of the episodes contain smoking, drinking, and racism. I contend that they were hilarious when I was a kid and still are. Given that I didn't turn out to be a chain-smoking, alcoholic, member of the KKK, I can only assume that watching these episodes does not have that effect on children. If you believe otherwise, please stick to the modern broadcasts or look elsewhere for entertainment.
At the time when we got these episodes my daughter was 4 or 5 years old and got very upset when anything bad happened to anyone in a cartoon. Tom and Jerry was the perfect thing because they continually do mean things to each other and keep coming back for more. There was no long term impact. It could just be a funny cartoon. In short, she quickly grew to love them and we've watched all of the episodes multiple times. I think it helped me give her a grasp on what was real vs what was pretend and silly. Your mileage may vary. ...after all, your child could grow up to be a chain smoking alcoholic member of the KKK if exposed to this filth.
If you do not like your kid being exposed to violence or racial stereotyping, DO NOT buy this cartoon. Tom and Jerry is probably one of the most violent cartoons of all time. Copy I received was the original, unedited version which had a long disclaimer in the beginning warning of the racial stereotyping of the time; some episodes contain "black face" skits that could be offensive to some viewers.

This set contains 40 shorts including some of the classic ones like Cat Concerto and Touche Pussycat.
The presentation is mixed bag throughout all of the shorts. Some of them have been wonderfully remastered as indicated on the package while others are in rough condition with grains visible on the screen.
I'm also dissapointed in finding out that some of them have been edited for content. The following shorts on the first disc have been edited: "The Little Orphan", "The Truce Hurts" and "The Milky Waif". These shorts contains some scenes that are racially offensive. However, WB claims that the reason why the edited shorts were placed on the discs is that there was a mixed up and they printed the discs with the edited masters instead of the uncut. There was talk of WB offering to replace the first disc with the uncut versions of the shorts but no firm details are available as of yet. I'm not sure what the direction of WB will be for future Tom and Jerry shorts but this could become an issue as there are much more shorts with racially offensive images especially with the character of "Mammy".
Even with the edited versions and less than stellar remastering on most shorts, I will still recommend this set to all Tom and Jerry and classic animation fans just to have it in their collection. I'll place this set alongside the Looney Tunes Golden Collections and the Disney Treasure series as a must buy. Hopefully WB will release a second set while correcting all of the issues presented in this first volume.
