About Tom Kane
I was born in the corner of the living room, behind the TV. So said my father many times, and the family agreed whole heartedly. That seems to have set the tone for the rest of my life. In the corner or behind the TV, what is known about my birth is that it was on a dark and stormy night.
My mother inspired me to write, Doctor Who and Isaac Asimov inspired my love of science fiction, Monty Python inspired me to be silly and I blame Billy Connolly for my infrequent bursts of bad language.

Blog postIf you are waiting for the end of my Christmas Seance story from Christmas 2021, I apologise for the publishing delay. Illness has stopped this writer working.
I’ve been ill over the last few weeks which has left me tired and listless, and no, not Covid-19 thankfully.
I’ve made slow progress getting back to normal and haven’t written an awful lot these last few weeks. But I promise to create a seasonal/unseasonal finale to the story and post it as soon as possible.

Blog postA Supplemental Iron Man It’s a saying you can apply to all walks of life. Give them an inch, and they will take a mile. I’m now applying this to medics. My recent heart fibrillation problem, it seems is not enough of an investigative challenge. My doc now wants to investigate my slight anaemia, potential stomach bleed and chest infection.

Blog postThe most natural thing for any human being to do is to take a breath. We do it without thinking. But sometimes we may find we are having a problem breathing. From anaemia to chest infections, to heart problems and covid-19, those of us suffering from an inability to breathe normally have my utmost sympathy. Unless you have experienced the feeling of utter panic because you cannot take a shallow breath let alone a deep breath, then you will have no idea what it’s like to be some sort of fish o5 months ago Read more

Blog postWhen it comes down to a health scare, it’s time for a heart-to-heart talk. I had been feeling a little off for a few days, unable to breathe properly and unable to work for too long or walk any distance without stopping for a breather. I assumed, because I had a cough, that I had some sort of winter virus. A rapid test discounted the chance it was covid-19 so it had to be something else.

Blog postIt’s 14 years in September since I moved from England to live as an expat in Cyprus. In all that time I have never experienced an earthquake. We get them on a regular basis, but even though all the people around me have felt the earthquake, I never have… until now. It’s 03:15 on 11th January 2022 and in the early, early morning as I was writing another blog piece, the earth shook… a lot. Blog postI’m not known, dear reader, for my emotional outbursts and flapping of arms in a panicky sort of way. I rarely panic, and certainly didn’t over covid the pandemic and other health issues I’ve had recently. I am, normally, as cool as a cucumber and take what life throws at me in my stride.
But I do have my moments. I’ve had some sort of virus to contend with for a week and my chest is very congested. This morning I woke up with a start, unable to catch my breath and almost slipped into6 months ago Read more -

“Calm yourself. It will be fine, child.” It was a soothing, motherly voice in her head, not the fearful and mocking man’s voice she heard earlier.
Ellie took a deep breath and concentrated on the here and now of her situation. There was a question in her head that was pounding away and demanding an answer. What was going in?

But for Maggie and Richard Blackmore, their search for each other goes on.

Eyes so bright and shining,
reflected by the sun.
But soon her smile did turn to fear, tears were in her eyes.
Darkness crowded in that place,

Living in Cyprus: 2020

2019 was a pretty bad year for me as an expat Englishman living in Cyprus. I lost one of my beloved dogs, Harvey, to cancer and toward the end of the year I broke seven ribs in a bad fall. I was told I was lucky to be alive. I'm thankful it wasn't worse. Then in the new year I contracted Swine Flu and almost immediately after that the Covid-19 virus swept the world. Cyprus was still a beautiful island to live on, but with a pandemic and multiple lockdowns, life in Cyprus was never going to be the same.

What rattles your cage and makes you put pen to paper? Tom Kane is an English ex-pat living in the small Mediterranean island of Cyprus, and these are his observations of life as an ex-pat in Cyprus. Although part of Europe and in the EU, Cyprus is close to the Middle East, which is a bit unnerving when you realise only a hundred miles away there is a civil war raging in Syria.
Tom has been blogging about Cyprus for many years and in this book we go from pornographic beer adverts to the island going broke, from Spy planes to flying dogs and from snake charming to rescuing dogs from a raging bush fire. Irreverent and funny but always observant, Tom Kane takes you on a ride through the funny, sad and odd side of Cyprus.

Working From Home: Brother Embroidery

Tom Kane
$2.99
Originally released in 2014 as “How to Start Your Own Embroidery Business” and updated in April 2018. This book is aimed at those wanting to work from home. Business startups face a tough time and a little bit of foreknowledge can go a long way. If you own or are thinking of buying a Brother embroidery machine and would like to start your own small business, then this is the book for you.
My wife and I set-up our personalised garment embroidery and vinyl printing business in England in 2006 and it was a great success. Though we are British through and through, we decided in 2008 to re-locate to the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Since then we have made our business an even bigger success. We now supply garments to three private schools on the island as well as sports teams in military bases on the island and local & international businesses.
What can you actually embroider on? Will it enhance the garment?
The answers to those two questions are, virtually any garment and yes, it will. T-Shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, school uniforms, sportswear, aprons, towels, military uniforms, cushion covers, shorts, bikinis and even underwear... and a lot of things I can't even think of are all easy to embroider and many you can also print on. Enhancing a garment means you are adding to its value. Adding to the value means you can sell it as premium goods. Do that on a regular basis and you have the makings of a profitable business.

Living in Cyprus: 2019

Living in Cyprus: 2019 is the seventh addition to my popular Living in Cyprus series. I've chronicled the day-to-day lives of myself and my wife along with our two English Springer Spaniels, Harvey and Holly. It's a tale of surviving as British expats in Cyprus, where life is never quite straightforward and always a surprise around the next corner.
When September 2019 came around we celebrated living in Cyprus for 11 years, but it never seems to get any easier.
2019 turned out to be a traumatic year for us what with Brexit, losing our beloved Harvey to cancer and even managing to have an accident that put me in hospital for 10 days at a hefty financial cost. It was without doubt a horrible year. And at the end of the year, just as we dared to hope things may be getting better, the Coronavirus began to have an impact on our lives.

Living in Cyprus: 2018

2018 saw the 10th anniversary of my life as expat in Cyprus. So far I've written five books about Living in Cyprus and this is the sixth. Bigger and better than any that have gone before it. This is not your conventional travel guide or a 'how to be an expat' guide. It is however full of useful thoughts, views, pictures, ideas and scenarios on what you may expect if you ever intend visiting or moving to Cyprus.
My wife and I moved here in 2008 and since then, I've spent a lot of time blogging about the trials and tribulations of an expat in Cyprus.
Though it started well, as 2018 moved on one problem after another arose, not least of which was a serious illness to one of our two dogs, Harvey. At one point, we thought we were going to lose him.
What we did lose was a large part of our business and we have realised that maybe we're being told to slow down and retire, a bit.
This is my 6th book in the series Living in Cyprus and is actually three books in one. I've included the travelogue of our trip to Australia and the trip to Lake Como, in Italy. I've also moved away from the Jan to Dec top to bottom reporting and tried to make it into as much of a narrative as possible.
The result is a book much bigger than previous volumes, probably three times bigger.
I hope you enjoy reading this.

What is there to do in Perth in Western Australia? Plenty, is the answer and there's a lot of places to visit in this beautiful city and its surrounding areas.
I'm Tom Kane and my journey took me from Cyprus to Qatar to Perth, where I stayed in Quinns Rock and Bussleton. In words and pictures, journey with me to Fremantle's ecletic market. Read about the escapes and executions at Fremantle's World Heritage site, the old prison.
We'll take a trip down the Swan River and a drive along the Indian Ocean coastal road.
Visit Perth's history and see the beauty of the city from the highway (yes, it is a beautiful view) and from the Swan River.
You can even walk with the sharks in Perth.
We will visit Margaret River and spend a long time getting lost in a 23 year old maze.
Join me on my journey of a lifetime to see all this and much more.
