I suppose I'm not a huge fan of the latest trend involving putting all sorts of extras into the GPS unit. I don't really need Bluetooth, email, and so forth - if I want all that, I'll carry a Netbook or something. Rather, I just want solid GPS that works anywhere and can reliably get me from point A to B with a minimum amount of fuss. If this is how you think, then the TomTom XL 340M is a good product at a very low price point. It has the basics implemented in a reasonable way, and not much else.
Updating is reasonably fast and doesn't require much more than connecting the unit to your PC (or Mac). As other reviewers point out, there's not a lot of extra space on the device, so updating probably means deleting the languages you don't use to free up adequate space. You can update the unit approximately once a quarter for as long as you own it at no additional charge (versus the unit in my car that costs $149 a year for an update DVD!).
I like the compact side and folding design. Easily fits in a jacket pocket, and there's not much more to carry with you. TomTom makes optional carry cases for this unit that make it even easier to lug around if you travel a lot like me. Construction quality seems about average for this type of unit - not terrific, but good enough to last a while.Read more ›
I've read some reviews that said that the screen is hard to read in the sun and such. Well, I live in Arizona and I haven't had any issues being able to see the screen during various times of the day. But I also have tinting on my windows, so maybe that helps?
Another complaint I've seen is that the computer voices mispronounce or completely botch some street names. Well, it's computer-generated speech and, though the technology has come a long way, a computer is gonna have a hell of a time with names like Camino De Oeste or Calle Pajarito. Personally, I get a good giggle out of listening to its odd interpretations.
Last, but most certainly not least: It's been said over and over and over in reviews, but I will say it again--Yes, there is a storage space issue involving the map update, but it's actually an easy fix, though it does take a few hours of your time to complete. BUT if you just want to use it out of the box, you don't have to do the update right away if at all. I didn't need it immediately, as I plan to use this for trips, so I had the time to do it.
If you are going to try the update, two words: BACK UP. Before you do anything, back up the unit using the software (TomTom Home, you can get it online).Read more ›
Unpacked it, did everything according to the instructions that came with it. First "TomTom Home" told me that there is no space to install the new map, and the "software cannot create extra space". So, I deleted some (French, etc.) voices I do not normally use. Then it said that the map cannot be installed because it was "inactivated". I used the activation code that came with the unit, and it did not work. I restarted the unit and then it said "there are no maps installed". Following instructions to correct the situation/install updates simply did not work.
There were numerous error messages appeared while I was trying to update the unit. Almost all of them wanted "anonymously submit the problem to TomTom", and that was the only "solution" I received for all the updating errors.
I think there is a VERY SERIOUS memory (hardware) problem in this device. It cannot accommodate new (larger) maps just because there is no space to save them in the unit. It seems like there are problems with "lifetime map update" offer as well; that is, "lifetime map update" is impossible because of hardware restrictions of this device. The activation code that came with the unit did not work either to get the updates or to "activate" the map.
No, I will not recommend this for a friend.
When I saw Amazon offer this as a Gold Box deal, I bought it for both of us to use. My wife immediately hated it. I kept it in my vehicle and used it a couple of times. I must say, I am not a fan.
I was excited about celebrity voices, just for the novelty aspect. I know, I know, it is juts a gimmick and the novelty does wear off. Its always fun though when someone hears Snoop Dogg giving the directions for the first time. The problem with celebrity voices, (or at least, with Snoop's voice) is that Tom Tom can;t possibly program Snoop's voice to speak street names, since he recorded his voice in a studio. There's no way this device could store every street name, IF Snoop could even record every street name. It is just too much audio data. So you end up with Snoop telling you to "Turn right", but never saying the street name.
That brings me to another point, this devices is sorely lacking in storage space. There just isn't enough room to store more than one voice and the pre-loaded maps take up most of the available space out-of-the-box.
Finally, and probably the worst thing about this GPS is its touch screen. You have to press really, really, really hard to get it to recognize your presses. This modern GPS feels and responds to your presses as if it is using pre-iPhone technology. If you are used to your cellphone's instant response, you will be disappointed with this device.
If none of this has helped you decide what to buy, consider this. Since my wife's GPS was stolen, we now need to buy another one. She won't use this one, and we plan to get another Garmin.
