I changed my review of this GPS from five stars down to three stars for a few different reasons and I ended up taking the GPS unit back to the place I purchased it from (it was very hard to walk away from the $129 sale price) and purchased the TomTom XL340 TM.
The main reason I traded this unit in for a new one was the user interface. I completely understand that TomTom wants to create a simple user interface geared towards the 80% of people who want a simple and easy to understand GPS unit. On this, the XL 350 TM performs exceptionally well. However, if you want to really customize the GPS to do things for you, then you are out of luck because you cannot update very manypreferences in the unit. I like to tinker with the GPS unit and in the end I want ultimate control over what is on the screen and what information I can or cannot get. The 350 TM does not give you ANY leeway to set up the GPS in the exact way you want. If you see the words "Easy Menu" on the box and you like to have control over everything the GPS displays then the unit will not be for you. If you want simple and easy-to-understand-out-of-the-box performance, then this GPS will work fine.
The XL 340TM GPS uses the old menu system from TomTom. I ended up paying $60 more for this GPS but it was important to me to be able to customize the menu system. This unit also has lifetime maps and traffic and this was my main reason for buying a new GPS. Instead of two options on the main screen, I have ten. Under the preferences menu this unit lets me check seven different boxes under the Safety Preferences menu. Additionally there are two other sub-screens under this that let me set when I am driving on the wrong side of the road and to choose if I ever want the map display shut off.Read more ›
1) The touch screen is difficult to use. It's very sluggish and unresponsive. It is so frustrating to brows the map.
2) There is no text instruction of the planned route. So you don't know which freeway/highway you are going to take unless you brows the map, which is so difficult.
3) There is no "shortest route" selection as alternatives. I agree that most time "shortest route" is pretty stupid. But users need to get an idea on the shortest way and plan route around it to balance speed and distance.
4) There is no itineray features. You spend all the time to plan a route and cannot save and reuse it?
5) You cannot avoid an area, such as avoid the roads through New York.
6) You cannot save your own POI by categories.
7) searching POI doesn't return much. I would prefer to wait a few seconds more to cover larger area.
All these above features existed in the models that I use. In my view, this new device is only useful for those who just want to type in an address and follow the directions. Anyone who wants to do more than that, such as examine the route or plan a different one, it is difficult to use.

Returned the XL350TM today and checked other models in the store. The higher end model TomTom Go740 still has the functionalities above. Seems TomTom stripped too much in their lower end model. Checked some Garmin models.Read more ›
As a stand-alone GPS navigator, this unit is decent and informative, and the front-end conclusion is that it works. For my purposes, I don't need Bluetooth capability, I don't need to view pictures or play mp3 songs on it, I do not need the elevation feature. I just need it to help me get from A to B. Having had experience with another TomTom GPS unit (XL 340TM) and a Garmin Nuvi 255W, I've made direct comparisons with these units. This review and the comparisons I posted here are, of course, subjective, though I tried to be as objective as possible.
For all intents and purpose, the TomTom 340 and 350 are almost identical in design and function, with some minor differences. Tracking the satellite signal at startup, the 340 picked up signal faster than the 350, the time difference varied from a few seconds to half a minute lag for the 350. When I plan the same destination for both units, the 350 took longer to route, taking from a few seconds to half a minute longer. When I drove around with both the 340 and the 350 side-by-side, they gave the exact same directions and the audio prompts were nearly identical (there were some 1 second lags between the two units, but mostly the same). When I deviated from the planned route, the reroute calculation took almost the exact same time, though the 350 lagged by at least a second (or more) 85% of the time. The 350 has a 2D/3D toggle button, which allows you to switch the map view. However, the 2D view only shows a North-up map and does not give you an option of having the map rotate/orient to the direction of the car.Read more ›
