What happens when you take a woman disguised as a man and throw her in the most hostile prison in the world?

Ana

The Tomb. A prison run by inmates; it is home to the most despicable scum of the earth.
And me.
Ana, but call me Josh. My life depends on it.

After disguising myself as a man for years, a fluke landed me in the worst possible prison. I may know how to fight but nothing could have prepared me for the depravity of The Tomb.

When the leader of this horrid place, Ax, discovers my secret, I assume that is it—I’m done for. Ready to be tossed to the savages of The Tomb, he instead claims me as his own and teaches me things about my body I never knew possible.

I know I need to use Ax and his desire for me if I’m ever to escape this place and be safe again. But I never expected it would be my heart I needed to protect most.

Axle

Incarcerated as a child, I’ve spent most of my life in The Tomb and the last ten years leading it. When a new batch of prisoners come in, I discover a woman hiding in their midst. Her fearlessness intrigues me, and I decide to keep her for myself, and her secret.

Bloodthirsty and ruthless are how I have been described, but I can tell Ana is going to change things. My darkness and addictions seem to dissipate when she’s close, and I fall harder than I ever thought possible. Now to keep her hidden, keep her mine, and ensure no one learns her secret.

This done in one quick read has some fascinating world building as we, the reader, find ourselves thrown, along with Ana, into the Tomb, A prison no one comes out of alive, that the guards have essentially abandoned to the prisoners.Axle is the main lead of this story, and while he is far from the typical hero , he's A fascinating man... effectively raised in the culture of the prison, he is doing his best to lead these people and maintain peace, or what passes for it, among their population.I was captivated by this story. Theo and Ethan were great supporting characters, and through some of the gangs in the Tomb we got to know Axle and how he dealt with situations.

I picked this book after seeing a recommendation on a Facebook group. This was my first time reading a prison romance and I was far from disappointed. This is a dark and steamy prison romance set in an alternate dystopian reality. The female main character is a strong Badass woman doing anything she can to survive in a dark world, the last thing on her mind was romance. The male main character is a murderous prisoner with a dark past, he is the last person you would expect to have a softer side. This book is addicting and you can’t help ball fall in love with the characters. I would highly recommend checking this book out. I’m already in the process of reading the next one in the series.

I like to read dark books, I like dystopian, and I like steamy romance. I got this book based on the gorgeous cover! While is is not something that I would hand a young person to read, I just found it lacking. The storyline was definitely promising. I felt the author got off to a good start with the intro of Ana/Josh, a female pretending to be male to protect herself, and Axel, the ruthless leader of a prison called the Tomb. The book has plenty of action almost immediately with rape, murder, cannibalism, and cutting. But after the initial drama, it gets pretty tame. And what happened to cause the split, what is the split, why are women so at risk in this new world? The author, in this first book of the series, should have given us more information in these areas, developing the scenario of how this world has changed. I have read ahead to the blurb for the next book in the series that gives us a glimpse into how the split took place. The author would have done a better job of capturing my desire to read on with more detail in book 1. I haven't decided yet if I will go any further.

A Fan-freaking-tastic story of violence and insanity in what could easily become to the world 🤐. Prison has never been supposed to be a good place, it's supposed to be a place of rehabilitation, but it's NOT 😖. It's just a place where those with power can abuse those that don't and if you take away the guards, all you have is anarchy 😡. Thanks Ella, I TRULY loved this book and look forward to reading more by you 🤓.

You've outdone yourself again, love! I wasn't as much into this as I was with Teddy (I'm not even sure why lol) but I still loved it, and of course I'm jumping right into the next one!

As a teeny tiny, sheltered woman, I can't fathom fighting to the death or even really being alone; Ax and his bloodlust, his need to protect Ana - that, I can totally understand, both as a woman who wants to take care of her Man and as a woman who has a Man who would do anything to keep me safe.

(While I'm leaving you a review, let it be known that if I could I'd totally bring you chocolate and an O, too 😉😘)

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was fairly clean, with occasional typos. Hopefully that will be fixed in the retail version. The world building was pretty bad, with me not getting any details about what caused the collapse of society or any of the political realities of the world beyond the prison. The prison itself was sketchily described, and I never got a good picture of what it looked like. The characterization was minimal, with the me the reader not really getting a good feel for either the hero or heroine as complex people. The development of the romantic relationship left me largely unmoved, maybe because the characterization was not good enough for me to emotionally invest in either of these characters. The plot and pacing had a lot of action, but I struggled a bit getting through this novel. There was high angst and very high stakes, but I did not especially enjoy the high stakes in this novel. I typically enjoy high stakes in a romance novel. This novel used the Cross-Dressing Heroine trope and the Prison Planet trope. The world building was two stars. The plot and pacing were three stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were also two stars. The combined score of this novel was therefore two stars for me. This is the first novel in a trilogy, but thankfully it did not end on a cliffhanger, so that is a plus. I do not recommend this novel for readers who enjoy the Prison Planet trope, because there are many better romance novels that use that trope. I am uninterested in reading the next novel in this series, and I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The final book of the Malice Mafia Series, I didn't want to read this as i knew my time with the Civella men was coming to an end.

Juliet's relationship with each of her men brought a different side to the story. Their dynamic and the parts they played were perfect.

I felt this book was highly emotional compared to the rest.

A Dark, gritty series. I really enjoyed it as a whole.

What a totally different spin. Not something I would generally seek out, but glad I have.

A ruthless jail, run by its inmates, Ana is thrust in disguised as a but after world outside world seems to be in a pandemic. Certainly fitting for 2020.

What will become of those incarcerated?

Wow. This book is like nothing I’ve ever read before! Trapped in a prison called the tomb ana/josh must find a way to survive whilst disguised as a boy.it isnt long before she catches the leader, axe’s, attention. The chemistry between these too is off the charts and there is so much violence but it’s a fantastic read! I can’t wait to see how the continue to survive the tomb!
