  • So I'm actually studying to be an archaeologist with a focus on ancient Egypt and I had a blast with this book. It's so difficult to find a good ancient Egypt based book without being so smutty and I absolutely devoured this book. It was nicely paced and had a great mix of history with fiction.   • This was an exciting story of mummies, adventure and light horror for teens. It didn't talk down to teens who might not know much about Egyptology and it did use the appropriate names for things. But that didn't bog down the story that built a bit slowly on the creep factor which I think developed the atmosphere and helped to sell the dread without it being a true horror novel. Things picked up and the writer delivered a well-written story that should appeal to people who liked the movie The Mummy. There was even a bit of romance. C.W. James is the pen name of an author who lives in rural Northern Nevada with two rescue cats. He enjoys hiking and movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, especially 'B' movies and the serials from Republic Pictures.

Under his real name, he has published four middle to upper-grade nonfiction books, as well as approximately two dozen magazine articles on topics such as movies and computer tutorials. He is a full member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

"C.W. James" is a combination of his middle name and his parents' middle names. He hates having his picture taken, so the photo is an artificial intelligence creation of somebody who doesn't exist.

The Tomb of Ptahmes, by C.W. James, might remind some readers of the TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It’s essentially historical fiction, drawing on events that took place in the early 20th century when many Egyptian tombs were unearthed and explored. Of course, some Egyptians feel that those explorations amounted to desecrations, and that is one of the major themes at play in this young adult novel.

Carter Pinsent proves to be an intelligent protagonist, if somewhat naïve. He has a sense of adventure and a desire to probe the mysteries of the fascinating Egyptian culture. However, like the protagonists in so many Hammer horror pictures of yore, he has little understanding of the powers with which he is meddling, at least at first. All too quickly does he realize the dead should be left to their own devices.

The writing is crisp and the narrative moves quickly, as masterfully plotted locations and interactions reveal more about Ptahmes and his otherworldly abilities. The book is made considerably richer by the creative cast of supporting characters, particularly May, who has much in common with Carter, despite the fact that their overall world views clash on a few specific points.

This is a fun book with some spooky moments that never get too intense for a young adult audience. Those who read it should come away with a better understanding of the Egyptian culture, and probably an aversion for invading the tombs of any Egyptian priests as well.

The Tomb of Ptahmes is a historical fiction book containing myth and magic by C.W. James. This story follows a group of interesting and different people, but the main person among them is Carter, who has archeology in his blood. It follow the journey of and the consequences of discovering the tomb of Ptahmes, who was a priest in ancient Egyptian times. The discovery of the priest's tomb is anything but a normal archeological discovery as many thrills unfold beyond just the act of treasure hunting. Magic and mayhem go hand-in-hand within this story as the action and the adventure unfold.

This story takes the reader on an adventure akin to The Mummy. We have the treasure, the myth, and the ancient Egyptian magic. This gives it an additional Goosebumps feel with Carter and May being the main drive of fighting for good to save their father's lives. The book has everything a person could want: history, intrigue, light spooky horror, love, magic, and the good old fight if good and evil. All of which is a good recipe for a fun time for any reader, but especially if you're interested in ancient Egypt.

I think this book had a good build up for the spooky horror and the suspense. It wasn't too much and just the perfect amount for teenager readers (or anyone who may be a scared cat). The various characters made it an interesting and fun read as well. I think what makes this book of particular interest is that it dives into the core of what humans are interested in, the unknown and the unquenchable thirst for knowledge and power. The Tomb of Ptahmes also gives into the love of wanting to be an archeologist and discovering the secrets buried in ancient world's past. I think this is a good read for anyone of any age.

This novel provides lovers of teen fiction a healthy helping of other genre blends
from; historical fiction, mystery, and a touch of romance that begins as rivals to lovers.
It is a story that transports you back in time to the 1920s in Egypt where Carter and
Malcom Pinsent are uncovering ancient hieroglyphics when they are interrupted by
Robert Ottley and his daughter May. This first greeting is the start of a twisting and
turning adventure for the children of these two historians. Carter is plagued with
nightmares after learning about the tomb, then Mr. Ottley is attacked, their workers
have stolen gold and the adventure spirals from there.
The Tomb of Ptahmes: A Tale of Historical Intrigue and Imaginative Fiction for
Teens, is like the name suggests, an intriguing tale for those who love reading historical
fiction. C.W. James does an excellent job of transporting readers to the time by using
phrases such as “...by jove!” and “...the dickens..” getting to see these phrases used
reminded me of the time frame and was a good addition to bring the story closer to
real life.
James does a fantastic job describing and setting the tone for each scene and
chapter. Through descriptive words James is able to foreshadow what you should be
feeling at the start of each chapter and by the end you feel like you have gone on a
rollercoaster. The various different ways to describe people, places and things are
always being put to use and will make the imagery of the novel so clear in your mind
while reading. I rate this novel a 4 out of 5 for the adventure of discovering what lies in
the Tomb of Ptahmes.
