Story/characters
For a game that tries to be cinematic, the story is bad. The game tries to come off as realistic, but all of that is thrown out the window in the first five minutes. The characters have no development (besides through collectables, which are not very rewarding to get) and feel very two dimensional. I did not care for anybody in this game. If you play games for the story, this probably is not the game for you.
Visuals
The visuals are beautiful. My favorite area in the game would be in the mountains on your way to the radio tower. There are a few times where the contrast is low and enemies are hard to pick out, though. Other than that, the game looks rather nice.
Gameplay
Tomb Raider's gunplay is really good. It's precise and the weapons are fun and satisfying to use. The various upgrades the player can unlock throughout the game improve upon the gunplay, too. The platforming was my favorite part of the game. Jumping, jumping, climbing, etc were all a great time. Most of the large action sequences involved this, so I was always looking forward to another "run away from danger" moment. The fact that Lara controls so well benefits this.
Although the gameplay itself is fun, what the player actually has to do in the game is rather repetitive. It's a cycle of sneaking around enemies, shooting enemies, then running away. This game does not offer any real challenge, but rather artificial difficulty. There are lots of enemies that will rush towards you. Defeating these enemies are not hard.
As for tombs, which are optional areas to explore for a reward, they are akin to shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Basically, there is a puzzle you have to solve and then you will be rewarded. These puzzles, once again, offer no real challenge or skill. Tombs go like this: You solve a simple puzzle, walk to a chest, and you get your reward. That's it. They're short and not very fun.
Other
- The game is riddled with glitches that never got patched out. These are very annoying when you encounter them and usually will force you to restart from the last save point or restart the game entirely. The game hardlocked on me twice during a playthrough, forcing me to reboot the game.
- Tomb Raider does not trust its players to remember how to play the game. A little blip will come up in the corner rather frequently telling you which buttons to press. I don't mind this whenever a new mechanic is introduced, but it kept happening.
- Besides trophies, there is not a lot of replayability
- The one character I did really like was Alex. He was a rather funny and sarcastic character, despite his lack of screentime.
- The collectables add onto the characters and develop them, but besides trophies, I did not feel pressured into collecting them.
- This game was short, which was a nice change from these 20-40 hour games we have been seeing recently. For those with busy schedules, this is a pleasant surprise.
Laura's new origin story is awesome. It's fun to play her and to see her develop her mad Maverick skills.
The animation is fantastic and I absolutely love the visual effects in the game. The scenes in the forest, the tombs, the mountains and other areas in the game are gorgeous! And some of them a scary, and kind of freak me out! lol
This is an action packed game, and there is so much more going on in this one than in the original ones from the 90s. I love the depth that they gave all of the characters, and I can't say enough good things about this game. I just love it and I'm so happy with it. It's so much fun to play! It's exciting and delivers an insane adrenaline rush.
Oh and another aspect that I love about this game is that it's fun for people to watch. When I play it, my boyfriend is usually with me, and he'll shout, "NO!" or "hurry, hurry...go go go!!!" when he's watching the action and adventure unfold as I play.
There's so much to love about this game. Did I already say that? Anyways, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :)
