My advice for using these: vary your line weights by alternating between the bullet and brush tip. At first, I was only using the brush tip and was disappointed in how boring the drawings looked. But simply outlining a bullet tip sketch with the brush gives it a nice graphic look. Photos attached.
Just recently discovered how nicely these react with water. I prefer to use a wet paintbrush rather than the blending marker (which I found useless), and only on watercolor paper. Normal sketchbook paper will tear if you try blending.
CONS: My only issue is how quickly these can overwork normal paper, and how easily they smear. Even a dry line with smear terribly if you draw over it with another marker. I think working from light to dark colors, like with watercolor paint, is safest.
Also, some of the colors in the portrait pack were questionable. The 800 pink is barely visible, and 912 is almost a fake-tan color. However, it's easy to find other uses even if they don't work as the pack name intends.
Overall, I love these things and will probably buy more in the future.
But long story short, these are really great for quick colors in your sketchbook! They very convenient to throw in a bag on the go.
The colors might be a bit hard to blend together since they're pretty different, but it'll get easier as you get more experience with them. They are not waterproof which doesn't really bother me because it's easier to blend these out with water anyways.
I also bought the grayscale ones, which I use more often for simple sketching, but I'll probably end up buying more of these in the other colors. The label "brush pen" is a bit misleading since these aren't really brush pens. it's more like a felt tip but getting varying line weight is no problem!
My daughter loves these as well and it helps her to practice watercolors with ease.
