The problems started for me when I opened the Amazon box to find it wasn't the brand of controller I ordered. A little off putting for a company to not sell you the product that you agreed to pay for but I decided to run it through it's paces to see if it was comparable. I quickly found the left shoulder button rarely works and the directional pad is not even close to being on par with the original SNES controller. Often, it would go diagonal when I was pressing one of the four main directions which is tolerable in some games like Legend of Zelda but games like Contra III: Alien Wars is all but unplayable when you can't duck.
The look was dead on but the function of this controller was shoddy and could use retooling. I would have gladly paid a few more dollars for a more true imitation in function and design to the original SNES gamepad. I will be returning this product.
Just as an afterthought - I can still pick up and play my old SNES with original controller and it feels as good as when my parents first brought it home for the family almost two decades after it was made. Am I expecting too much for a clone made with modern materials in a modern facility to perform at least to that standard out of the box?
Now the main issue people complain about here is the D-Pad. The D-Pad is just 1 piece of plastic with little plastic tubes that push down onto little rubberized sensors on the circuit board. Most of the time if you press on the bottom it'll register as bottom-right or bottom-left, making games like Contra and 8-directional games very annoying to play. But I fixed it, here's how:
What you need: Screwdriver, nail filer (or sandpaper or anything rough enough to shave away at plastic)
Take a small screwdriver and remove the screws on the back (peel off the sticker to reveal the last screw, took me a good 5 minutes of trying to yank at it to figure that out). The d-pad and buttons should come out easy enough. Take the d-pad and shave away at the 4 tubes under each direction (do NOT touch the middle plastic tube). Shave them down to about 3/4 of their original size, maybe less. Make sure they're all about the same height and flat. Now my controllers work perfectly, no problems at all!
I found this fixes the issue of a multi-response when you press a direction on the d-pad because when the tubes were longer (considering they're all on 1 piece of plastic), they were more prone to slight movement and activation of another direction by accident. Shortening them simply eliminates the risk of them accidentally hitting the right or left sensor when you just want to hit down.
Hope this helps, enjoy your controller!
I have made a video which demonstrates the problem with this product.
(UPDATE): I got around to opening the controller today and the problem was being caused by a little malformed piece of plastic on the D-pad, it was easily scraped off with my fingernail. The controller works flawlessly now. I have to add that I've been inside a few of these types of controllers and this is by far the best build quality I've seen in a very long time. This controller won't inexplicably break on you. Keep in mind that you may have to open the controller, but I feel my case was probably uncommon. I have to say after seeing the guts of this controller I'm impressed, it is very solid.
