A well-designed product

I bought this about a month ago to take to a beach vacation in the San Diego area.The bottom half of the aluminum post is a large plastic augur that screws into the sand. It actually worked well because the post has a handle that snaps out to the sides (forming a T) so you can get some torque on the fat plastic screw that you're trying to sink in the sand. I was surprised at how well it worked. I'm 75 and didn't have any problems. The umbrella remained firmly planted. At times the wind got a little blustery and I thought the umbrella might become a kite, but it stayed firmly in the ground. Of course, if the winds get too powerful nothing is going to stay put forever. This umbrella has some louvers in the top that let some of breeze escape. The umbrella is light and easy to carry and it's wide enough to provide shade for two people and perhaps a small child.

Not like they used to be

I've used a Tommy Bahama beach umbrella for the last 3 years without any problems. The built in sand anchor always screws into the sand nicely and holds really well. In late June I noticed a slight bend in one of the umbrella supports and tried to straighten it. It broke almost immediately. No worries, I splinted it and ordered a new replacement. The new model of this umbrella barely lasted a month before the sand screw which is now hollow or much weaker plastic than before twisted into an unusable shape rather than dig into the sand. The umbrella arms are now thin wire rods instead of aluminum bars. The old model head leather pockets for the bars to seat into. The new one does not. The handles for turning the lower pole into the sand are so low now that you need to get on your knees to get it done. All in all I'm not happy with the changes made to what was once a fine product.

Great big beach umbrella!

My husband ordered this umbrella for me because I don’t like to spend too much time under the sun specially at the beach. We have owned different types of beach umbrellas in the past but they were smaller and flimsy. This Tommy Bahama is wonderful! It’s a full size beach umbrella. Same size that the ones you rent by day outside of the condos. It was very easy to install and to buried it in the sand. We have very windy days at Panama City Beach for fall break and this umbrella stayed in place the whole time.
Also very easy to carry.
Definitely recommend it! It’s worth every penny.

This is a must-have for frequent beach-goers. Unlike my beach tent, this is a very easy setup. The sand anchor makes it quick and simple to stand this umbrella up in under a minute.
Visually, very nice. There are several colors to choose from per Tommy Bahama - I simply chose the blue and green as I prefer those colors and are less expensive.
The shade cover is adequate. Be mindful that this is designed for two chairs - this isn't an umbrella that would provide shade for multiple people.
Even on a windy day, this did not blow over. Highly recommend.

Flimsy and dangerous

This is a very attractive-looking umbrella, and I like the Tommy Bahama brand, but this umbrella is a dud. It turns inside out at the slightest of winds. The tilt feature plus using it as low to the sand as possible helps keep it from flying away. But I'm very uneasy on the beach as it flaps in the wind like no other umbrella I've ever owned. In fact, if you observe a beach on a windy day, the Tommy Bahama umbrellas are the ones moving the most. I am usually holding onto the pole the whole time. I would return it but I stupidly got rid of the packing and had placed my initials on it with a Sharpie before having tried it out. Let this be a warning to you beach lovers--get a different brand.

Completely fell apart while using it at the beach

Love this umbrella! So easy to use and carry. It's very light. It would be great if it were just a little bit bigger but it still works for my daughter and me.
I hate to edit a review however this umbrella completely fell apart after using it only a few times. I bought it because it said it could withstand a bit of wind. One day at the beach we heard a noise and a piece had popped off the pole and the top of the umbrella disconnected and went tumbling to the ground. It will not go back together and is now rendered useless. Very disappointed as I went with this umbrella versus a lower-end one to avoid an issue such as this.

This umbrella is really excellent. It's the second one I buy from Tommy Bahama, and I am pretty sure it will not be last one!
This umbrella seems to be even better: it's so sturdy, and the material is of a very good quality. Now it is also possible to regulate the height.
It's also very light when I need to carry it all the way to the beach! On the beach, I install it myself and it has never shaken on account of the wind that can blow quite strong where I go. I always receive a lot of compliments, and I am more and more satisfied by this purchase.
In a nutshell, it's a great product for a very reasonable price: highly recommended!

We recently purchased the matchi by TB beach chairs and so far love them. We also purchased a different shade maker, the Sportbrella. Which I like but I wanted to try this umbrella too. At this time I'm not sure which we will end up using more. The TB umbrella has a built in sand anchor which worked great. It did flip a bit in the wind while setting up but it popped right back into shape and held up great in the light but steady breeze on north shore Oahu. The shared area of the TB is smaller than the SB but it's less to haul and it matches our Chairs which is a plus.
