Product Description
Tomorrow Never Dies is a high-octane account of media power as a lethal weapon when global communications in the wrong hands can literally manufacture the news and even challenge the course of history. Media magnate Elliot Carver wants everyone in the world tuned into his communications network. In order to do this, he must manufacture the news. His motto is "There's no news like bad news," He deliberately sets out to start a war and it's up to James Bond to stop him before he achieves his goal.

Here the evil-doer is Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce), a megalomaniacal media mogul. He's bent on creating world-wide disasters so that his newspapers and non-stop news stations can get the scoop on everyone else. Evidently China has prevented him from establishing a news empire within the country, so he decides to create a potentially war-starting confrontation between China and England. He and his science nerd (Ricky Jay) have stolen some type of GPS device from the Americans. They use it to manipulate the positioning readings on a British destroyer so that it shows they are well off the coast of the Chinese mainland. In fact they are within the 12 mile territorial limit.
The Chinese air force sends a couple fighters out as a warning but the Brits insist they are not that close. All the while, Carver and his compatriots have created a stealth ship and an interesting torpedo shaped drilling device. When used against the navy ship, it sinks along with its Patriot missiles. Easy access for the bad guys and the various governments don't even know where the ship really is. Oh, and they shoot down one of the Chinese MIGs, just to really piss everybody off.
Bond is sent to investigate as Carver's new wife, Paris (Teri Hatcher) is an old flame of Bond's. She doesn't last long as she obviously can't resist 007's charms which gets her in trouble with her sugar daddy. As Bond recovers the GPS device, he gets to show off the newly improved BMW 750i. You might remember after all the promotional hype of BMW in "Goldeneye," its only appearance was a drive down an airport runway by CIA agent Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker) in a Z-3. They made up for it here in an inventive drive by 007 in the backseat, driving the car by remote control installed on his phone. There's also a terrific scene with Bond and Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh) on a BMW motorcycle. Wai Lin is a Chinese agent trying to find out what's what herself. Yeoh adds a bit of class to the film and is an appropriate counterpart to Bond's suaveness.
So what does the PG-13 get us? Well, a bit more carnage, a bit more skin and some interesting conversation. I especially liked the scene near the beginning where Bond is taking language lessons from a Scandinavian linguist...in bed of course. On the phone with Ms. Moneypenny (Samantha Bond), she says to Bond, "You always were a cunning linguist, James." `M' (Judy Dench) walks up behind her and Moneypenny says "Don't ask." `M' replies "Don't tell." Overall this is a satisfying and entertaining James Bond film. Even with the excessive shoot out on Carver's stealth boat, some of the other scenes solidify Brosnan as an excellent James Bond.
The Blu ray disc comes with a 1080p video resolution and a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The picture looks great. Colors are limited but look very good. I could see no problems with digital noise and no remnants of scratches or other video crud. Detail, black levels and skin tones were all excellent. The audio comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 option and it is terrific just like its predecessor. The surrounds are fully active and there is plenty to surround yourself with including missiles, jets, gunfights, car and motorcycle engines racing, helicopters, and a pretty good soundtrack by David Arnold. A modest less-than-great title song is performed by Sheryl Crow and over the closing credits k.d. lange sings "Surrender." Subtitles are available in Spanish, French, English SDH, Portuguese, German, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. There a too many extras to list here but count on commentary tracks, an isolated music track, extended and deleted scenes, music videos, several featurettes and more.
michelle yeoh as wai lin did an excellent job i like the duo that they had it was dynamic and added something new and fresh something that overrated Danial Craig as bond never really had except being all action and no real story before going full woke at the end of his awful run
When I first saw Michele Yeoh perform in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", I viewed her as an extremely intelligent, artistic person with a warrior's spirit and a skill with the weapons of that time to match. I wonder why she had to perform in a Bond film? It would seem so dull and lacking a depth of plot for her. Instead of building her own unique genre of films, she is another Bond girl. To understand this better, suppose Chuck Norris was offered a role in this film instead of Yeoh. Would he be likely to accept? No, it would distract from his own image as an ultratough dispenser of justice to deeply nasty villains. Yeoh is a more refined Chuck Norris, who still recognizes the need to stop the evil she is witnessing. In this film, she never gets an intellectual or emotional challenge. Her role is very different than it was in Crouching Tiger. It doesn't come through as a plausibly good fit for her.
I enjoy watching this movie tremendously. It lacks any sense of realistic action, but it is fun!
Besides rating the movie, I'd like to rate delivery of the movie to my viewing hardware. For the first playing of this movie on Amazon Instant Video, I connected my MacBook Pro to an Apple 27" LED Display, and connected an ethernet cable from the MacBook to my network switch in order to stream the video. I did this on a Sunday evening, which might influence Amazon's delivery of the movie since one might expect there will be many more viewers than usual on Amazon's network on a Sunday night. It turned out that the connection quality for much of the film was poor. Images were very grainy at times. Perhaps trying to play a movie on my 27" monitor was a problem for my hardware. Also at times, the video would inexplicably stop streaming. At first I thought this might be my own fault. Perhaps my FiOS router/access point simply can't handle such a steady flood of data. That seems a bit silly though. Or perhaps my router is dropping connections. But now I'm thinking that perhaps Amazon's content delivery is the problem. Maybe it has a tough time handling the load on it during weekends. I don't know. I then watched this movie a second time, from the beginning, on a Monday evening. I did not use my 27" monitor but rather played it on my MacBook's LCD screen. Not only did I experience really great streaming performance, the images looked fantastic! So perhaps watching video on weekday evenings is a better deal.

You may be interested to know, also, that this is, allegedly, the uncut version of the film. The film was slightly cut by the BBFC for its original cinema and video release, but the Ultimate Edition (this is the same version) contains all of the material previously cut by the BBFC, though it is only a matter of several seconds of footage. So, if you want the most complete version of the film, this is the one to get. As I said, if you have only ever seen the film at the cinema or on video, then you aren't really missing much, so it's up to you.
Overall, this is a superb Bond film and worth buying. Brosnan's Bond career took a nosedive after this film, but it is still worlds better than most of the Daniel Craig Bond films, in my opinion. This was the last really decent film in the series, before the 2006 version of Casino Royale, but even that was flawed. If you want to see Pierce looking more comfortable and confident in the role of James Bond, then buy this and remember back when the Bond films were actually good...

This one 'The world is not enough' fits the good fun category.
Strangely Mr Brosnan's first film 'Tomorrow never dies, (this being his second), went in the rubbish category.
I move on now to 'Die another day'. Wish me luck.

Yeoh is also brilliant and beautiful and she too is super-cool. Add in the fact that she did lots of her stunts herself, then you have a very convincing Bond girl (she's also from the Chinese Intelligence in this film).
I personally think that Pryce is a great villain ! He may not be as menacing as Sanchez but then that's not the point of him... He's a megalomaniac looking for coverage rights of a war he's looking on starting, he's a different kind of villain (in my mind). Some of the speeches he does are fantastic, and I love the "there's no news, like bad news" line.
Plus, we have, albeit for a very short amount of time, the unforgettable Dr Kaufman !
All in all, a great Bond adventure with all the elements to make any Bond fan extremely happy (like me !)
