I have to wonder how much of the product bashing is more about the latter than the former. I'm not going to say much more than that, other than to note that certain groups have targeted (continue to do so) P&G. If you have your differences with them, them say so in the appropriate forum(s), knock yourself out. But if you're using a "letter writing campaign" via negative product reviews, that's a little dishonest. I'm writing this review under toothpaste, but the same comments would apply to the Tom's deodorants and hand soaps that I purchase and use.
I am especially prone to canker sores, regrettably. Sunburn, stress, any type of cold, etc. I keep a tube of abreva handy at the house and in my travel bag (not an endorsement, simply an observation). I have been using Tom's cinnamon toothpaste for nearly two years now. Not once has it caused a canker sore.
On occasion, when traveling or simply because she is out of her normal "sensitive toothpaste" brand, my wife has used this toothpaste as well. I can assure you that she is very sensitive to any chemicals and never has she had a problem with this toothpaste (other than she's not crazy about the flavor I like).
I have no affiliation with Toms of Maine, other than I purchase and use their products. And, to test my theory about these comments, I just purchased a competing toothpaste brand to see if I notice a difference.Read more ›
But she just didn't like the taste.
When she told her parents, they couldn't understand. They didn't know any anti-mintites and never, ever had there been one in their family. They could trace their mintite lineage back to biblical times, after all. Why would God test them like this, what had they done to deserve this?
Mother simply tried to ignore the problem, thinking that perhaps she would outgrow her hatred of mint. Father? Father was the worst, growing more distant with each passing day, staying away on business trips longer, coming home later reeking of mint juleps or mojitos. The sorrow in his eyes turning to anger as he started blaming mother's side of the family.
It was the stranger that saved them. Borne on the back of a mighty steed named "Rascal", she rolled through the toothpaste aisle of Wal-Mart, her flowered mu-mu billowing like a cape behind her unbelievably large frame. She overheard the argument with mother, the same argument they had every few months as mother tried to push another mint toothpaste on her. As the tears started flowing and the anger was on the rise, the stranger spoke...
"You know, Tom's of Maine has an orange-mango flavored toothpaste."
Those words, those sweet, sweet words, changed her life forever.Read more ›
Tom's is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom's alone to manage their business according to their original principles.
Tom's makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains "flavor," whatever that is, "saccharine," and "propylene glycol." The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom's toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it.
I have been using Tom's for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot, Soothing Mint, True Mint, and Gingermint, among others. I prefer the Peppermint flavor, which is refreshing, but not overwhelming. The toothpaste is available in sizes from 1 ounce to 6 ounces.
I do not exactly live in a wilderness area, but my local stores no longer carry Tom's. Fortunately, it can be found on Amazon and other web sites. The prices do vary from vendor to vendor, so check for the best price.

I don't like sweet toothpastes so Tom, whoever he is, is my hero. This, and the now-defunct Fennel, were my favorites as they both had unexpected, clean, comforting flavors... Read morePublished 7 days ago by W. Moore
