It's light-weight and compact, without any bulky feeling to it.
The included stand is helpful, but you might also attach the monitor directly to a 1/4" standard thread, on a tripod.
There is a metal, female connector on the bottom of the monitor, so you can skip the whole adaptor contraption.
I attached a photo to this review - the additional adaptor you see there, under the monitor, is not really needed. I was just trying it on.
The power supply that came with it has a really short cable. It's not very useful outdoors so I've opened it up and I removed cable.
I've built a small battery compartment, with 8 AA batteries and the cable from a power supply.
That made it portable and useful in the field.
Amazingly - this unit uses so little energy that a fresh set of 8 AA batteries lasted almost an hour and half, running non-stop.
I also removed the S-Video cable. It was there to use with a Raspberry Pi microcomputer system. I didn't need it.
A five-minute soldering work took care of it.
The remote control is a nice touch too.
When I first powered this unit up my instinct was to turn the brightness all the way up.
That's not really necessary. The over-saturated picture loses details.
I use this unit with a Sony camera, hooked up directly to an HDMI output.
Both video AND audio play on the monitor and there's even a digital volume control. Very nice.
This monitor can be very useful with cranes and all kinds of applications where you can't look at the camera display directly.
I see it useful for short-distance cave/crevice exploration, camera-on-a-monopod overhead filming and all kinds of dolly-installed camera contraptions.
This is definitely an affordable solution for a non-professional external monitor.
It's made of plastic and I will need to be gentle with it, but for the price I paid - it's a lot of bang for a buck.
On the downside, the power supply died about 5 minutes after I first plugged the monitor in. This was really disappointing, as I was on the road at the time! Fortunately I was able to cut the cable and use a 12V supply that I had on hand.
Since writing this review, Tontec actually mailed me a new power supply (without me even asking). That was pretty nice, and shows that they are committed to making this screen work. They report to me that the new supply (which has worked for a few straight days so far) comes with all new screens. So, I'm bumping my review up a star for great customer service.
