About the Author

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, and drove cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York, with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Too Hot to Handle is the first book in a series about 4 siblings who find themselves on a road trip to fulfill their late mother’s last wish. She wants them to do a polar plunge together in New York on New Years Day. I have a brother who does this every year in Wisconsin. I absolutely adore him, but he’s obviously not right in the head. If I happen to outlive him and his dying wish is for me to jump in a freezing cold lake, I might have some explaining to do when we join up in the ever after because there is not enough Jägermeister in this world to make me think that is a good idea.

I decided that Rita was the screw-up, Aaron was the sanctimonious jerk, Peggy was the diva, and Belton was the stoic emotional mess. I found myself wondering about their late mother and how she could be so beloved by her children, yet raise four seriously screwed up kids who couldn’t seem to be able to stand each other. One or two I get, but all of them? That’s one of the many things I added to my “things that make you go “Hmmm” about this book list.

Off they went fussing and fighting the whole way, or at least until their rusty SUV breaks down in Nowheresville. With no cell service, they send their sister off with a stranger to the nearest town to send a tow truck. That’s some pure brotherly love there, I don’t care if they did take a picture of his license plate.

Jasper, the stranger, noticed Rita right away. The good news is he was hot, had a bike, and he wasn’t an ax murderer. I was really surprised that he also didn’t have an alpha bone in his body. For years he was known as the party guy who owned the local bar. He was good for a roll in the hay, but not much else.

*Series Premise - It all started with their Mom's liquor induced last wish before she passed that they also experience one of the highlights of her life, well that was what she told them at least. *I have to say, their Mom, Miriam, sounds like she was a fun lady.* So now these siblings, Belmont, Rita, Aaron, and Peggy, are off to New York, rather reluctantly at first, to make that request a reality, albeit with stipulations on when it starts, a certain stopping point, and a plus one for the trip.* This book focuses on Rita's personal journey.

Belmont, the oldest, has been a loner emotionally speaking since a childhood accident, and his salvage business seems to be the perfect job for his laid-back self. Rita, a chef like their Mom, is now watching her dreams literally go up in flames. Aaron, the quintessential politician, likes to make an entrance and flash that attention getting smile. Then there's Peggy, the youngest, who knows how to get what she wants, just not how to keep it or be happy with it. As evidenced by her collection of engagement rings, which is up to four now. I have to admit, I know it shouldn't be the case, but I fell a little in love with Peggy due to two lines from her..."Mom probably would have wanted me to talk to those firefighters, though. Am I right?" Her joy for life needs to be contagious.

Rita is experiencing a crap moment after another crap moment. Not only is she still grieving the loss of her Mom, but she also recently lost on a reality cooking show, and the outcome of that will forever live in infamy thanks to YouTube, a contest that she should've won, and now she's watching her Mom's restaurant burn to the ground. *Did she break a mirror and not know it? Walk under a ladder? Things have to get better soon, right?

Tessa Bailey has done it again. She's created a story that is fun, sexy, sweet, snarky, moving, and full of heart.

When your world is falling down around you, when you have no idea where you are going, what you want, who you want to be, what do you do, what would you do? If you are Rita Clarkson you run but you don't run on your own and you don't run with out a plan. Rita Clarkson is questioning everything she ever believed to be true about herself. Are the dreams she has believed she wanted her entire life the dreams she truly wants? Is she a failure or is she a success? All she knows for sure...she feels like a failure. In a last attempt to save herself from the hell she's in while watching her mothers restaurant literally go down in flames around her she takes her mother's 'last words' to heart and with the support of her siblings (who aren't always known to be the most supportive) she hits the road for New York and a chilly dip for a polar bear plunge.

First I would like to say that I love the family dynamic of the Clarkson's. Their mother Miriam while not without her faults (but we can't really beat her up for them now can we?) seems like she would have been an amazing woman. Full of life and passion. She may not have always been the most attentive mother but it is clear that she passed on that passion to her children in various ways. I also love the siblings, they remind me so much of my own sisters and brother. The fact that we are off doing our own things, living our own life, not really the best communicators, but the minute one of us calls we'll he there. Rita is the pillar of the siblings. Always doing what SHE believes is what is expected, always looking for ways to bring her family together even though she has failed again and again.
