The chisels I was sent DO NOT match the description or the pictures on the web site. This is the third time this has been done to me. I hate the new handle design. It is DECEPTIVE for amazon to use the the old (better) handle description and pictures to sell the new (cheaper, inferior) chisels. Amazon should update the photos and description or SEND ME WHAT YOU SOLD ME

The chisel received is NOT the chisel in the image. It does not say "MADE IN SHEFFIELD ENGLAND" and the handle is cylindrical. It is a photo of the original version of the Marples BlueChip. The product packaging states made in China and the Amazon description should clearly state that.

This chisel is not machined or finished as nicely as my original Marples BlueChip and I do not expect it to perform as well. The handle shape is a big disappointment as I was very fond of the rounded rectangular handle cross section.

I was looking for a replacement chisel and found this Marples BlueChip. Knowing they used to be very good I ordered one. When it came I discovered that it was not like the picture and was made in China. I took it to my shop to sharpen it and found it was curved almost beyond repair when I started lapping it. After spending more than an hour trying to get the back flat I got a decent edge on it. I will use it but it will be the last Irwin "Marples" I will buy. Irwin bought out a good company and trashed it. Too bad! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Due to the very small cross section of this chisel, the alloy and temper of the steel will be critical. This size sharpens very easily as there is so little material to have to remove to get the razor edge. Its small size is harder to support by feel and I would recommend a clamp on honing guide for stability. I used this to clean up the ends of a few 1/4 wide mortices and was quite happy with the razor edge and its durability. Since this size is typically reserved for very small tenon and groove cleanup, this chisel should perform as well as the Marples chisel. Even if more frequent sharpening is required, it is a matter of seconds for this size.

I bought 10 of these Irwin marples chisels because I expected to get the chisels that are in the picture. What a mistake!!!! They clearly show made in England on the blade but I got are Chinese junk !! Very misleading ad. They are not carbon steel but instead they are chrome vanadium. A far weaker and and sub quality metal. I gave two stars because I will keep them simply for a back up-just in case- set. To much of a hassle to return. Don't buy if you need them for high end finish work or use them in anything harder than teak. The only thing the same about the ad and the actual chisel is the price. D--

When I bought this chisel, I expected to get the one pictured.

Unfortunately the chisel has been redesigned, and for some reason the manufacturer has kept the old part numbers.

I'm at a loss as to how to know which chisel style you will receive.

I didn't like the new style, it tapers from the mallet end to the blade. This design is OK if you only strike your chisels but is difficult to hold if you try paring cuts. Your hands slip toward the blade, you can't hold it tight enough.

If the handle style makes a difference, you might have to contact the seller and confirm just what style you will receive.

My solution was to buy a Marples 4 chisel set, they were of the old style handle. These chisels came sharp enough for most work but I added a quick hone and flatten the backs before use.

I like the Marple chisels, as shown.

Seems to be made of decent steel though I'm a little leary of the plastic handle. It just feels light to me like it may be thin and hollow. (It says it has a lifetime guarantee). The design is fine otherwise and the price is really good. This small chisel isn't one you would really be pounding on so it should be ok. I bought this to fill in a set of much nicer chisels because they don't sell one this small. This does seem like a good entry level woodworking tool.
After using this tool some more, I wish the handle had a flat side to keep it from rolling off the table or project. Otherwise it's a VERY nice chisel for the price. Sharpens up nicely and is pretty well machined from the get go. Not to much effort to get a nicely polished back and bevel.

I really like these chisels considering their price range. The handles seem a bit hard for striking with a regular hammer, but a soft faced mallet works perfectly fine. They are moderately sharp from the factory but I would recommend honing a micro-bevel before use. You can find many videos on youtube about that. Also I should mention that they come with a tip guard. I know most people don't use them or lose them, but I really like them and am happy that they come with one.
