Avid has a page showing how to "optimize Windows for Pro Tools", do this, it will solve many issues. And it's good for any recording program you might use. There are also some things you must change on the Mac so the monitor doesn't sleep and the hard drives don't go to sleep on you. Set the sound input and output to the audio interface you are using. Don't skip this!
Before you launch the program, setup the audio interface. Plug in the audio interface, and set the unit as default in sounds settings in Windows. Do a search for Asio4all.exe and download it and install it. Now with the iLok plugged into a USB 2.0 input (not USB 3.0) and the interface setup, run Pro Tools (right click on Pro Tools icon and check the box to always run as administrator) and it should work for you.
I also installed PT 11.3 on a Mac Pro, Mavericks 10.9.5.( I have Yosemite 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro and as of now Avid recommends Mavericks 10.9.5 for PT 11 as there are fewer to none issues with that system.) The audio interface was connected first, then run any driver for the interface. Then install PT 11.
After the program is running there are only a couple minor differences between the Mac and Windows program. After all this, if you get the program to fully start and run, you can relax. You got it! Yow! Pro Tools can be as simple or as complicated as you need it to be, they have now included "templates" which get you going quicker. Get "Pro Tools for Dummies" book, available at Amazon.
PT Express is a limited version of PT 10 which is a 32 bit program so it can only be used on Windows 7, OS 10.6.7 thru 10.7.4 Lion,
It is still useful but the obvious thing to do is get PT 11. PT 11 will work in Windows 7 64 bit.
Also!! You MUST download "AIR CREATIVE COLLECTION" One is for Mac, one is for Windows, each is over 2GB. This is the instruments and processors you need to make music.
Instructional guides are in .pdf form, download the appropriate one for your version of PT and there is one for AIR CREATIVE COLLECTION.
The guides are very good, very helpful.
Gotta add that the Fast Track Solo and Duo DO NOT have Midi capability. Just search "midi interface" or "audio midi interface"on Amazon.
M-Audio 2 channel is good it has every kind of input and phantom power, etc. The Alesis version is same as, but for the color, silver.
