The aim of dentistry is to "save every tooth." Sounds good, but at what cost? A dead tooth can be functional while undermining your immune system and general health. This book is a self defense manual for patients who don't want to be victims. Dentists can be dangerous if they have a mechanical, not a biological, view of their work. And their interests are often not the same as yours. The profit motive can put blinders on people.
The author discusses the economic, political, and legal forces that make the dental business deadly. Yes, it is a business. On page 83 he says that the ADA can revoke dental licenses. No trade organization should have that kind of power! Insurance companies also can derail the best interests of the patient.
This book exceeded my expectations. It is clear and easy to read, despite poor editing. It is illustrated. It is not outdated. It is understandable to lay readers and covers all the angles, with special emphasis on mercury fillings. It covers crowns, bridges, root canals, implants, cavitations, bonding, sealants, veneering, etc. It is a scathing, but fair and justified, attack on dentistry as practiced today. It suggests alternatives, such as metal-free dentistry. By metal-free dentistry the author means bonding with composite resins, not crowning with ceramics or porcelains. (Real porcelains are not metal-free, as they contain aluminum.) He warns against all crowns. The focus is on prevention and preservation of tooth structure.
