Editorial Reviews

Review

Canoeist Kevin Callan, author of the bestseller The Happy Camper, has mined his Paddler's Guides series to compile this top-50 list for his 13th book on canoe trips in Ontario. Whether you're looking for a two-day outing or a week-long adventure, Callan provides all the information you need for each route--the number of portages and their lengths, river features, historical notes, and maps. He also includes difficulty ratings and use advice such as where the poison ivy is lurking. (Liz Grogan Good Times 2011-05-31)

This is a well written book and offers great maps and descriptions for several routes that I have been on and some that I still hope to see.

NOT a practical canoe guide for anyone seeking day trips.

The majority of the trips outlined in the book are for multiple days.

The book does a nice job outlining:

1.) Distance of each trip
2.) Number of portages
3.) Potential obstacles
4.) Park permits
5.) Expected scenery (wildlife and plant life)
6.) History of the areas and runs
7.) Difficulty of the runs (since most the runs take multiple days... the book is already geared to serious canoe enthusiast)

My advice to get the most out of this book is to narrow down your trip by the number of days you are willing/able to commit and the area you plan on being in. Read ahead and plan ahead.

My major disappointment with the book is that I was not able to take 4 days off for a canoe run. I ended up canoeing in a town named Paris in Southern Ontario down the Grand River. The run was 16 km and a beautiful run. I spent $70 to do the run as I rented the canoe from a rental shop in town. There is pretty much only one canoe rental shop in this town and they do a great job. Their website is: http://grand-experiences.com/.
