Some good information for app users

I really don't use apps other than what came on my Kindle Fire. I know nothing about them and always shy away from downloading anything for fear of a virus or crashes or whatever else can go wrong but I was curious when I saw 'Top Free Kindle Fire Apps: An Introduction, Plus Tips and Tricks' by Andrew Middleton (The App Bible). Although I still don't use any apps it is a nice way to save time if I did want to use any. The book is easy to use and rates the top ten free apps in areas that are important such as if it crashes, how well it interacts with other apps, if it is easy to use, and so on.

Another nice feature is that all the apps are in chapters of their kind. For example: game apps, kid's apps, and productivity apps. Then there is a chapter for 'Tips and Tricks' which I found interesting and you can use some of the information no matter if you use apps or not such as how to conserve battery life on your Kindle Fire. If I did use apps I would definitely be reading the "How to avoid accidental In-App Purchases" again as well as a few others.

Other features of the book are there are links to other books written as well as links to the apps mentioned in the book. I don't know if all the links work since I have no use for them however as with everything in this digital age, I imagine some links are no longer valid but at least the name is still there so you can look it up on Amazon to see if it is still available if it is something you are interested in.

I know a lot of research and trials went into the writing of this book and although I didn't find it really useful for my situation, I am sure those of you who do use apps will find it much more useful. It is a good introduction to the top ten apps, what they do, what order to load them (I didn't know you had to load apps in a certain order), without having to load them and trying them all out yourself. The rating system is explained and easy to understand and also how turn off the ability to make in-app purchases.

This "book" contains (1) the author's somewhat detailed recommendations for a grand total of 10 apps, (2) a couple of pages of helpful hints on topics like improving Kindle battery life and turning off in-app purchases, and (3) a plug for the author's other books about the Kindle. This particular book is shamelessly padded to get to even this brief length, with a detailed explanation of the author's criteria for rating apps and a portion of each recommendation devoted to an analysis of the reviews for the app on the Amazon website when the book was published (which the author admits has likely changed since then).

Anyone should be able to get through this book in fifteen minutes, although if you do look at the individual apps reviewed it will take longer. The reviews for each app contain suggestions for the use of each app, which include strategy tips for the games the author reviews. Unfortunately, the book does not contain any screen captures or other illustrations for each app, so the only way readers can see how the app looks is by visiting the Amazon site. As long as this book is offered for free as a promotion for the author's other books about the Kindle, it's okay to spend a few minutes perusing it. However, anyone paying money would be sorely disappointed, and even as a free book, there's not a whole lot of value offered here.

I confess: I cheated. I speed-read this book, in order to discover as quickly as possible what I might be missing. Fortunately the writer made the task easy. A couple or three sentence-structure/diction problems still have me scratching my head, but as the writer remarks, he IS a techie, so even when he doesn't make TOTAL sense he makes ENOUGH sense for his purpose, which I take to be enabling me to get straight to the info. As he points out, apps change, upgrade, discontinue, AND the list is really for the HD, but I did learn five gratifying things I hadn't known an hour earlier.

Okay, you caught me. I confess. I downloaded this book because it was incredibly cheap and short and I couldn't understand why somebody would spend a good chunk of his time reviewing and recommend apps that are free.

I mean, c'mon, people who critique free stuff must be crazy Amazon reviewers, like yours truly.

Well, about five pages into this book, I realized, the writer has some good points. His technique is thorough, methodical, and is an easy, quick read. I think, as I review, I might try incorporating some of his methods.

Before I download any free apps, I think I will check to see if a review is included in Top Free Kindle Fire Apps.

Time spent on reading this book for an appraisal of a free app is time well spent.
