Editorial Reviews

Top Gear 17 begins with Jeremy throwing a low key party for the 50th anniversary of the legendary Jaguar E-type—complete with live music, classic fighter planes and a group of Royal Marines. Richard Hammond finds himself in South Africa testing a bigger, even more rugged alternative to the famous Hummer while James May meets up with gold medal winning British Olympian Amy Williams for a wintry test of the latest Mini rally car. The boys then head to Italy to take part in a series of tricky challenges (and increasingly loud arguments) as they attempt to find the world's best hot hatchback. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a full track test of the incredible McLaren MP4-12C as it meets its deadliest supercar rival, the Ferrari 458. “Celebrities in a Reasonably Priced Car” include rock legend Alice Cooper, comedian Ross Noble and Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel. It’s more madness, mayhem, and motor hilarity with the world’s most popular car entertainment show, Top Gear!

What more can we say to these chaps, they are true to their audience and are bloody fantastic hosts'. There is no other motoring show like UK/TopGear. The choice of cars and other type of vehicles they review have always been top-notch, the machines always take center stage.

I can watch this episode already on Hulu+ or Netflix but I wanted to own it because it is what I consider to be a "perfect" episode of the show. The car review is the quintessentially British Aston-Martin Virage. The "Star in the Reasonably Priced Car" is the virtually-unknown-outside-the-UK but very funny Ross Noble. However, it's the location "challenge" video that's the "set piece de resistance" for this episode. It starts off as an ordinary hot-hatchback story in Italy with the lads each choosing their idea of the "best in breed" but, after a few of the standard challenges they're sent down to Monaco to get the best times for their rigs (as we say out here in the western USA) on three laps of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix course.

They are, of course, as happy as pigs in slop at the opportunity, Jeremy Clarkson especially so. He does his homework, pays very close attention to his trainer on the practice runs and approaches the race with professional determination. Sorry, no spoilers, watch the episode to see what happens.

Decided to plunk down the extra cash for the blu ray version because the netflix quality stream is not the greatest. Going from that to this blu ray was night and day. I was a little miffed that they did not decide to release Season 18 in blu ray due to "lack of demand". That is one sale they missed from me. I just watched it on netflix instead.

Top Gear keeps delivering! What a great show. We stumbled on it recently and have enjoyed watching the past seasons. Wish all seasons were available in Blu Ray! Add this series to your BR collection - sharp wit, caustic (and often off color) humor - it's something the guys will really enjoy.

My sons and husband love Top Gear. Me, I've gotta be in the mood for it, but do find it amusing on occasion. Only problem is they're able to get the episodes free from our local library. I purchased this one as a special treat for them because it's brand new and they've not seen it yet. They loved it because it featured one of their (collective) favorite cars, a Jaguar something or other :-) I prefer the Black Adder series for my British Humor fix :-)

Top Gear remains after 17 (really 21) seasons one of the most interesting and enjoyable automotive programs on TV.
Car shows get boring fast but never Top Gear, thanks to the chemistry among the presenters. Good writing, Great cars and a lot of fun.

Its Top Gear, season 17. I can't wait for season 18 to air and then be available. Its been said a thousand times before, Top Gear isn't a car show. Its a show that has cars in it. It's pure entertainment revolving around mostly cars but also pretty much anything that moves and makes a lot of noise! I've seen a few episodes of the American version and that would get half a star if I even bothered to review it, which would take me purchasing it which would never happen. The original Top Gear is the best and it'll be a very sad day when the show ends. There is just something special about how the three Brits get along, interact and pick on each other. Sure lots of the "reality" of the show is scripted but WHO CARES, they're not trying to be 100% reality they're succeeding and being 100% genuine automotive entertainment and comedy at the same time. If you want a "real" review of a car read a review by one of the pompous asses over at MotorTrend, Road and Track or Car and Driver, they'll never "get" what Top Gear is all about because they take themselves too seriously.

The English version of Top Gear is by far the best show on cars ever made. No, they don't review the crap we Americans usually drive but who'd watch a show about mini vans or Buick LeSabres?

If you know what a DB5 is and find English humor entertaining this is your show. If you would like to know what a DB5 is (think James Bond) then this is your show. If you just like adults behaving like teenagers in some of the greatest cars ever made then this is your show.
