A man is given a coin by his uncle after his death. It's a dime, with nothing really special about it. Except that it's from the future. It's not a misprint or a mistake. But is it really possible that his uncle discovered the secret to time travel before his death?
If you were on top of the world, or just on top of a mountain, when the zombie apocalypse strikes, what would you do? The short story that lends it name to the title of the collection takes a look at the choices that face you when you go away for a week or two and the whole world changes without you. Do you check on your loved ones, knowing how dangerous the journey is and that a happy reunion is unlikely? Do you stay where you're safe, far away from most people (and zombies)? Or do you try to do something amazing and make your greatest dream come true?
Is Heaven real? Would Houdini show up to a massive seance/rock concert? Do ghosts exist? Do love potions work? What happens when clowns go to war with each other? That's right, clowns at war. It's not pretty, people. And I'm not just talking about how the clown war used up all the pies.
Glen Cadigan likes to write about off-beat, sometimes downright twisted ideas. But in doing that, he asks really interesting questions. That's what keeps me coming back, first to the Bedlam and Belfry stories and now to Top of the World.
