My commute involves bringing my MacBook pro, a change of clothes, possibly a tablet. If I have exceptional things like snack refills, new books, etc. they can easily go in the middle sack, which also expands to be larger. The side bags hang easily and out of the way, and the rack itself supports them away from the rear tire. I keep light, lock and tools in the center with plenty of room for other stuff. Managed to clip my rear bike light to the pouch in the back, into which I've also managed to fit my 18oz double-walled thermos - in a bit of a tight fit, but it works out just right.
The whole point was to remove the weight from my back, making biking fun and reasonable again. This, and the associated carrier bag, have served in spades.
The one thing you should know before getting this is that it's designed for bikes that bosses by the seat post for the arms to attach to. I think most modern bikes have these, but I had to ream out the holes in the arms so that I could attach it to the seat post bolt instead.
It is super easy to hold the bagpack by using the springed holder to push and hold the backpack against the saddle.
Super easy to install as well!
