I purchased the 1.5 ton Torin aluminum Racing Jack in anodized red from PepBoys. The anodized aluminum looks great and the low profile was perfect for raising my Honda S2000. For several years (at least 3yrs as far as remember) it provided decent service, raising one corner of the S2000 at a time, without any issues. Recently I had to raise the front end of my wife's Honda Element and while raising the car from the factory center location to put jack stands on, the jack started to bleed profusely from it's belly. I tried sending an email to Torin via their website and did not receive any replies to my request to purchase a seal rebuild kit.

I will be throwing away the jack as I do not trust it anymore and I do not care to wait for Torin to reply to my 2 week old email. My next jack will be more expensive but it will be stamped with "Made in USA."

**01/01/13** Update: First went out and bought the Arcan XL325R 3.25 ton jack from Costco for $99! A great jack for a great price. Only downside is weight.

Decided to tear open the Torin and see if I can rebuild it. Very easy to get to the piston:

****Before I began, I wore proper eye protection***

1. Removed vent screw and drained all hydraulic fluid.
2. Removed the 4 allen head bolts holding the reservoir on each side to allow better acccess to the plunger later on.
3. Turned the jack over and removed the bolt that has two flat sides (reduced tension on bolt
by pulling spring towards the bolt). Then removed spring.
4. Removed the eye bolt by turning the eye (do not adjust it's nut). This will separate the plunger from the rod it connects to.
5. Used a flat head screw driver and a light hammer to loosen the large cylinder nut using the two notches on the nut.
6.

I had this Jack for 7 months, used sparingly. For those 7 months I was happy with it. Good sturdy construction with thoughtful grip-areas. It did its job well.

However, after 7 months I saw a puddle of oil seeping out from under the jack. It was unusable after that. Turns out it is a fairly common issue with this model as some other sites with reviews show people with the same kind of issues.

I have not found a suitable replacement (that is as easy to use in this price point) but it sucks that a 100 dollar jack would only last 7 months. I have (and relatives as well) 25 dollar autozone specials that come with jackstands that are still going strong after 2-3 years.

If you have this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS use jackstands with this. I don't trust it with my car and I certainly don't trust it with my life.

Check valve failed mid lift after 2 months of home use causing handle to flip up hitting me in the jaw full force. Amazon, please pull this product from your inventory! It is dangerous. I was hit so hard my tongue was punctured and required stitching. I still have no feeling in left half of my tounge. Think trip to dentist that doesn't stop.

I had this jack for two months before it broke. The jack had a pin that bent that connects the handle to the hydraulics. While Aluminum jacks reduce weight not every part should be aluminum, some parts should still be made from steel. At 46 Lb the jack is not even that light, I got this jack to use when i go to the race track for when I need to change brake pads or a tire. It had a 1 year warranty. After multiple attempts to contact the manufacture, they never responded to my email or returned the voice mails. They do not answer the phone all calls go directly to voice mail. Its now 6 moths later and I have tried contacting the manufacture a multitude of times by phone and email. no response. I wont buy their products again.

The jack did have to have the air bleed. The easiest way to do this is to have someone stand on the jack twist the handle clock wise and close the release valve and raise it to the max height. While raising the jack you will notice that it will not lift the person, which is good as it's pushing out the air from the ram. Once the jack is at the max height it will go after 20 pumps or so. Open the air purge valve (uploaded picture to show the air purge valve). Once you hear the air release close the air purge valve and then turn the handle counter-clock wise and lower the jack. Repeat as needed. After two or three time with a 200 pound person all the air was out and working great. This took about 10 minutes to do. I have a lowered 84 camaro and this jack works great for it. no problem with lifting it.

In theory, this is a good jack. It's relatively low profile, lightwieght and jacks up quickly. It's not very heavy duty, which is fine as that's how it's marketed. I use it on a well-sub 3,000 pound car and would not want to use it on anything more than that.

Anyway, the main issue as many have reported is that it leaks. At first it wasn't so bad, and I just filled it up with new fluid every so often, but it gets progressively worse until it just doesn't work. Don't buy this jack.

Honest, this jack will stop working. I used it effectively for a few months with my race car then the jack simply stopped functioning. I followed the instructions exactly as they were presented to get it going. I did not abuse this jack, it was not used to lift anything beyond its capacity, and it was stored in a heated garage. I tried to use it a week ago and it simply would not lift a thing. Really, don't waste your money. It's not a good value if it does not work. More importantly, DO NOT TRUST this jack to hold-up a car as you crawl under it.
