A plug in trimmer seems to be the best option. This Toro 51480 is priced low and I was not expecting much, but the build quality is very good. The motor is very powerful. It has no problem beating even heavy grass and plants. Not quite on par with a full size gas unit, but very close. And I don't have to wear ear protection.
The auto feed is a bit of a problem. On other trimmers, you smack it on the ground to let out extra string. This Toro, it lets out string every time you start it from full stop. The string that comes with it is very poor and wears out quickly. If you hit a rock, the string is almost gone before you let off the trigger. To spool out about 2 inches of string, you have to stop and start it about 5 times. It's really annoying and it gets worse in heavy brush.
I also picked up "Cyclone .065-Inch-by-300-Foot Spool Commercial Grade 6-Blade 1/2-Pound Grass Trimmer Line, Blue CY065D1/2-12" on Amazon. This string is wonderful. It cuts better, and last far longer. I am no longer stopping and starting the Toro every 5 seconds to advance the string in heavy brush. Toss the string the Toro comes with in the trash and use this.
The combination of this Toro and the Cyclone string make this an awesome tool.
Still haven't figured out how to re-spool this thing properly). As you can see in photo 1, the manual says there should be slots on both top and bottom but this spool only has slots on the top. The provided diagram also shows NOTHING.
1.) It has a single speed motor. As others have accurately noted it has plenty of power. However, when that power is not needed as when trimming lite vegetation or when trimming around your prize plants the constant full power becomes a serious control issue. I have both a gas trimmer and a battery trimmer and their variable speed make them eminently easy to use in a variety of trimming situations and allowing precise control and neat even cutting. Same cannot be said for the Toro.
2.) The length of the handle is adjustable but the degree of adjustment is quite small and not enough for an already too short handle. Fully extended it is still too short for my 6' 1" height.
3.) As others have noted the line is too lite, breaks too easily, and does not always feed properly. Given the power of the motor a little engineering to allow use of the next size up line would have made this a better all around trimmer. With the .065 line it has trouble cutting through the heavier grass despite the motor's adequate power.
In conclusion, yes, it is a well built unit and with patience it will complete your trimming needs but the job will likely look pretty sloppy when done and you will not have enjoyed using this trimmer as much as a more precise and contollable variable speed unit. My bad for not more thoroughly researching this trimmer's specifications before ordering it. I was relying too much on the Toro name.
This may seem trivial to some, but it cuts my trimming speed about in half while I am constantly stopping and goosing the trigger to feed enough line back out to resume trimming.
Also, if you're just doing brief odds and ends trimming around the yard, the auto feed feature again feeds out line every time you release the trigger, which can result in the string being TOO long, so it beats itself against the guard until the ends are cut off. Very annoying.
I much prefer tap-to-advance string advance for these reasons.
