I have a fair sized patio and back yard which require daily blowdown due to the mesquite trees which are usually dropping something (leaves, pollen, beans) plus it's a bit dusty in Arizona and you want to blow it off the furniture and such. I dind't want to hassle with batteries, the use of 100 foot cord on a reel makes it pretty simple to use a corded model, gas is too much and smelly and messy; battery means a charger and station to charge it at and maybe forgetting one day and finding it doesn't work. It would be nice to be free of the cord but added cost and issues of battereis make this work best overall.
It is a bit more powerful than the earlier one and it does have two speeds, the lower speed is quite handy when I get blowing around the table or chairs especially things don't go flying off so easily. By the way don't buy based on the mph of the output. You can have a straw that puts out 400 mph. I suppose the velocity ratings are useful in trying to figure out which is more powerful but I would suggest looking at the amperage as your best bet for comparisons. However having a bigger faster stream of air is not necessarily a blessing, This one is strong enough to blow rocks out of the borders, stronger would seem to have relatively little use without a much bigger yard. YMMV.
It is smaller than the old one, not quite so long but mostly more compact in its body; but not lighter. that's unfortunate because I'm getting older and I sort of figured they'd have reduced the weight, Still not a complaint. It is a bit easier to limit the stream or to direct it to a more focused area and that's a really good improvement if a small one.
The cord keeper is a smaller hook and a connector on a stub of cord rather than a molded depression in the body to seat the head of your cord into; it has come off once in my first few days of use and the other one never did in 15 years.
It is faster but not noticeably noisier.
Overall I find it works pretty well and is a good choice of trade-offs as a corded electric.
I am in the process of calling Toro, they sent me to an authorized dealer to check it out. The process at this point is unpleasant. A machine on fire, and they want to question user error on my time and effort to drive this junk to the dealer! No machine should be on fire no matter how stupid a user is. This should be a basic designing logic in safety precaution. I hope this gets resolved quickly as we are in the leaf cleaning season. I will report back the final outcome and its process
