Materials cheapened from earlier models - quality DOWN appreciably

Overall, this blower is not as powerful as earlier models and it's apparent they've gone to great lengths to cheapen the product with materials of less quality -- examples:

(1) Leaf bagger U-shaped main coupling/adapter is roughly 1/2 the thickness of earlier models, it's flimsy and very thin, vulnerable to cracking
(2) Leaf collection bag is smaller than previous models, made of a less durable material
(3) Primary speed switch remains a single point of failure as it is not separately replaceable --- if it fails (common in the past models I've owned) you need to replace the entire motor assembly
(4) Obvious reductions across the board in parts sizes, thicknesses from earlier models -- the cover inlet is 25% smaller than earlier machines. Blower tube is 25% smaller. Leaf vacuum assembly is 25% smaller AND increasingly likely to clog given the volume has been reduced.

Ergonomics, ease of use remain a big problem with the machine's design when you shift from leaf blowing to leaf vacuuming -- placement of the bag, electrical cord, etc is AWKARD and they interfere with the "work path" when you're trying to vacuum up leaves --- poor design from a human factors point of view.

I realize the Toro people are under pressure to reduce costs, improve margins but it's obvious they've gone overboard reducing the quality in this machine compared to earlier models.

This is one fine machine! Amazon literally had it on my front door step less than 24 hours after I purchased it.

I read the negative reviews and can only assume they were written by whiney Democrats with nothing better to do than make stuff up and complain.

I'm an old school guy who restores cars and uses all sortsa tools and machines in old school ways, i.e., no safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respirators, helmets, harnesses, plate armor, parachutes, sandbags, etc....

First of all, instructions are only for the simple minded. I don't even know why things come with them, they just take up room and have to be thrown away.

Assembly. The assembly for this thing is so easy, it practically puts itself together. So anybody bitching about that probably needs help opening their own beer.

They probably don't even drink beer.

Noise. Its no damn louder than your lawn mower. The tulips complaining about the noise probably play Adam Lambert in their Nissan Leafs louder than this thing blows leaves.

The Bag. Throw it in the garbage with the instructions. You don't even need it. Just keep the dog in the house and send the old lady and the kids to the mall so they don't get beaned by a walnut.

Function. It blows and sucks better than Stormy Daniels. With the bag off, you can grind up leaves and small twigs to your hearts content and then just blow the debris outta the way without changing stuff around.

Its heavy. Maybe for Adam Lambert its heavy. There are at least a dozen positions you can hold this thing in. Change your grip as needed.

Why 4 stars? Because I'm not sure how rugged it is. It works like a champ, but the housing and attachments are all light gauge plastic. Stuffs snaps on and off with plastic clips and like everything else these days, its built to fail.

Price and performance make this one a solid investment if you wanna not just blow leaves around, but pulverize em, too.

Only some will understand the title of this review.

So let me spell it out: A combination leaf blower / mulcher is like a cheat code for life.

Raking my back yard typically goes something like this...

I go out and buy leaf bags. I'll generally buy three packs, for a total of 15 bags. I assume that I'm over-estimating because my back yard isn't really that big. How could I possibly need more?

Spend an entire afternoon raking leaves. Arms feel like rubber, but I'm really only half way done. Now to start bagging. I tell the neighbor he is welcome to use any of my left over bags.

By bag 12 I realize the error of my ways.

Cursing the universe for the invention of Fall, I go back to the store for more bags. Of course they are sold out. So now I'm faced with the real moral dilemma of either going store-to-store to try to find more bags, or giving up, leaving the remaining piles of leaves to the whims of fate, and going inside for a glass of whiskey.

Either way, I'm thinking I could just solve all of my problems if I get a chainsaw and go on a tree assassination mission throughout the neighborhood so I don't have to deal with this next year.

After a friend brought over his gas-powered blower so I could clear off my driveway and patio, I realized where my life had gone wrong and how I could remedy it.

I decided to opt for this corded blower. It claims to reduce the amount of bags you'll need dramatically. "Ok, little guy, you keep telling yourself that," I'm thinking condescendingly as I go ahead and buy three packs of lawn bags. I figure as long as it saves me the task of raking, I'll consider myself ahead of the game.

I make 4 large piles of leaves in the yard. It takes all of about 15 minutes. Already this thing is my hero. And now it's the moment of truth. I switch over to the vacuum / mulcher.

Now, you might think that what I'm about to tell you is an exaggeration. I must be lying. But I am not. I consider this year's leaf bombardment to be at least typical, and had I gone the traditional route of cursing and tears, I fully expect that it would have again taken three or more packs of bags.

This thing mulched my entire yard down into THREE BAGS. Not packs. BAGS.

Even as I was closing up the final (third) bag of leaves, I couldn't believe what had just happened. My neighbor was already 6 bags into his yard and had barely put a dent into his piles. That used to be me, pal. That used to be me.

I had just Konami coded my yard.

Ok, so if you've read this far, things to know:

1. I'm happy with this unit overall so far, but I've deducted a star because it *is* a tad bit clunky to use. Switching out between the blower tools and the mulching tools is slightly awkward. Also, the cord management isn't the best. There is a "hook" you can wrap the cord around, but because of the smooth plastic and the way it's angled, the cord still likes to slip out and if you're not careful you can unplug yourself -- not the end of the world, but annoying.

2. One thing I *DO* like about this is how much quieter it is that the gas powered units I've been around. Don't get me wrong, this thing is still like holding a mini-jet engine in terms of noise...If you've spent your life attending concerts, this may not be that big of a deal to you. Otherwise, I wouldn't consider you some sort of weirdo if you wanted to use ear protection with this thing.

3. Sort of like my German Shepherd, this thing can eat too fast if you don't keep an eye on it. You'll know when the mulcher takes too large of a bite. The suction will stop and it'll start whining like you just took away its favorite toy. Just detach and unclog the tube and don't be so impatient. You'll be fine.

One final thought: I've really only tacked my yard once. It's doubtful I'll have need to use it again this year (but I'll likely let some friends use it on their yards). So I can't really speak yet as to the longevity /reliability of this unit.

Update: It's been two years. You know, when that honeymoon phase is supposed to have faded and now you're actually willing to express your annoyance when the dishwasher isn't loaded the way you like (e.g., the efficient way)? Well, forget the fear that the luster will have faded. This unit is still going strong. Even scored some bonus points helping out the neighbor across the street. He had a similar unit, different brand, and marveled at how much better this one functioned. And let's face it, who doesn't like scoring some one-up points in the neighborhood? It's the little victories that count.

Absolute power house! This is about the 51621 model. My gas powered leaf blower/vacuum broke so I thought I would try an electric one. This one beats the gas one hands down! Very powerful. It is heavy but solid. I like the many hand holds allowing for different holding positions. The mulch created is very small, See pictures to get an Idea. I am very satisfied with this device so far.

My ordered from Amazon a Toro UltraPlus Blower/Vacuum model 51621 arrived fast. My husband was happy to try it out. Here is his experience: The blower tripped a 15 Amp GFCI seconds after it started. He powered the blower from a plug inside the house, not protected by a GFCI mini-breaker and the blower functioned well.

To get Toro technical assistance he called 1-888-430-1687 as per the instruction manual. He asked to talk to a technical assistance but the lady asked for my zip code and she gave him local telephone number. The person at that number (call center)1-800-544-5364 gave another tech service number. The man he spoke to knew nothing about a electrical Toro blowers he only only knew about gas blowers. He has done a full circle and without anyone to assist with this problem. He suspect that the third harmonics generated by the 51621 blower is so high that it tricks the GFCI into tripping. The instruction manual does not specify the harmonics content generated by the VFD and there is no mention that the blower meets IEEE Std 519. Is there anyone could give any suggestion or recommendation? So much for after sales service! Our lawnmower and trimmer both using the same cable and outside plugs and work fine!

We had an electrician check our system, he changed the breaker for less sensitive GFI and now the blower works very well. I would give 5 star but not having help or reaching any knowledgeable technician from TORO is realy pitiful. The blower is fantastic and easy to use, and eliminates leaveas racking, this is the best part!!

To start I love it. This is one heck of a wind storm. The vacuum is vary strong. I am extremely happy with the speed control ability. I use it to clean up the yard after cutting the lawn. This takes about 40 min. So I find this blower on the heavy side. It's not so heavy I need to stop but I do now I'm working, doesn't help that I have a 100 foot cord hanging off of it though. So knowing what I know would I buy it again. O ya, this is the best blower i have had. EVER!

Another "easy" product that actually makes things harder

I bought this for the vacuum functionality. So first off, you need to leaf blow into a pile before vacuuming them up or it will take an absolute eternity to go over the whole yard. That's to be expected. Once in a pile, it sucks up leaves at a moderate pace. It is not fast, and is probably the most powerful electric model available. It avoids having to bend over at the expense of taking about 3x longer. Keep in mind this thing is not light, and gets heaver as the bag fills, so although you don't have to bend you have to carry for longer.

Performance varies depending on leaf type and if they are wet. Small leaves (1-2 inches): works well wet or dry. Medium leaves (3-4 inches): works ok dry, clogs in 10 seconds if wet. Large leaves (5-6 inches): clogs in under 5 seconds wet or dry.

Overall this thing is only worth it for small leaves, but even then just picking them up is substantially faster. The only saving grace is it prevents the need to bend over if you don't mind lifting instead.

As an alternative, consider NuVue Yard Scoops. A pile that takes 20 minutes with this vacuum takes about 4 minutes with the scoops. You will have to bend over but not as much as picking up by hand (they give you a good 8 inches reach), and they are very light. This is what I use and will continue to use after being disappointed with the Toro Vacuum.

I live in ravine. Need about 30 leaf bags to clean up the fallen leaves. I've read some amazing reviews here and went for it. It does have amazing suction power and sturdy metal grinder. But it occasionally stops for doing heavy sectioning on mountains of leaves. So I had to use old way and used it for clean up which I'm still happy about. Shoulder strip is little short for 6'3 guy like me too. Overall still happy but don't expect magical grind all experience.

Does a good job blowing and mulching leaves...that said it does have a tendency as others have noted to clog. This is due to improper use (ie holding it above the pile as opposed to close to the ground will clog it in a hurry), sticks and wet leaves (pack into turbine housing until it doesn't suck good anymore (not the end of the world i just unplug, remove vacuum hose/leaf bag, and clean periodically with flat head screwdriver)... Overall for me its handy to blow leaves and grind them up into small pieces to fit into compost bin...wouldn't call it a huge time saver (over lawn mower rake and bag etc) unless your in dry conditions with no sticks it does drastically reduce the size of leaf litter and doesn't leave a mess on the ground like lawn mover mulching method!
