Toro 51496 Cordless 24-Volt Hedge Trimmer
Toro's powerful, extended-life, 24-volt max* hedge trimmer provides a cutting width of 24 inches for extended reach and offers a cordless design that makes it easy to access hedges just about anywhere--great for larger yards where a cord just won't reach. The trimmer's not only lightweight and easy to use, but it also runs quietly, which both you and your neighbors will appreciate.
Even more, the hedge trimmer's ergonomic handle rotates 90 degrees in each direction for convenient accessibility when trimming vertically, and its dual-action blades greatly minimizes vibration when compared to a single-blade hedge trimmer. With its soft-grip assist handle for reduced hand fatigue, the hedge trimmer measures 8 by 8 by 36 inches and carries a two-year warranty.
24-Volt Max* Lithium-Ion Battery
Lithium-ion design provides up to twice the power per weight versus traditional nickel-cadmium batteries. Longer run time with no memory effects and low self-discharge means the battery is ready when you are. The on-board LED charge meter displays the battery status.
24-Inch Dual-Action Blades
24-inch-long cutting bar with polished, hardened-steel dual-action blades provides outstanding durability and extended reach to get the job done faster. It easily cuts through branches up to 5/8-inch thick.
The handle rotates 90 degrees in each direction, making trimming vertically easy and comfortable.
Work Grip Handles
The work grip handles help reduce hand fatigue and improve comfort while trimming.

1.) The metal wire guide attached to the front is unnecessary and just gets in the way; rip that thing off to have much more freedom and depth of cut.
2.) The slider switch you have to slide back before pulling the trigger is one of those things that seems it's only there due to a past lawsuit where someone's dumb kid went around whipping people....who knows? Either way, it's annoying and unnecessary. If you don't have young kids, or have just taught them properly, simply remove all the screws in the upper handle, separate the two halves, and disengage that junk.
3.) The pivoting head and wheel operation was something I was excited about when I first bought it. Now, after having used it for quite some time, I can say that it's just about everything I expected. It's a nice and convenient touch. However, the button to disengage the head for pivoting doesn't usually work on the first tap. To be fair, I use the tip of my shoe to lightly tap it when they've probably designed it to be brought up and done by hand. It's not a big deal, but it seems obvious that during the design phase, some sort of foot operated button should have definitely been the way do go. Anyway, I do it with my foot, it works eventually, sometimes I have to tap it a few times while twisting the head down into the grass. Something's bound to break eventually doing it this way...
4.) The string length is about 2 inches shorter than I'd prefer. I have some areas that need a slightly longer line in order to cut. The longer strings would certainly have affected the battery time.
5.) The Battery compartment where the battery slides in is much larger than the standard battery because it also supports an extended battery. To me, that's kind of tacky to sell me a tool that's not fully equipped with what it was designed for without buying "upgrades". Just charge me $40 more and put the good battery in there to begin with!!!
Yeah, I can be particular sometimes but overall, I like the product. It's lightweight, convenient without the cord problem, and is powerful enough for lawn type grasses. The battery will last me throughout both my front and backyard areas, but only if I don't spend too much time whipping weeds in the concrete cracks, etc. I would recommend this to a friend but would suggest to just order it with the extended battery. I give it four stars because the things I didn't like were more pesky things rather than things I'd consider product flaws.
It is a bit heavier and the blade is about twice as long as the 13" Black&Decker corded model that we had before, so I was a little concerned that it might not be as maneuverable as the B&D.
It trims much quicker then did the B&D. It is substantially easier to manipulate, too; and that shows in the quality of the finished job. Furthermore, not having to deal with a trailing power cord has been wonderful.
Being able to swivel the blade 90° left or right turned out to be quite useful and more of a convenience than I expected.
I think this trimmer saved me about half my trim time over the B&D, and the hedges look the best ever. It took me about an hour and the battery still had half its charge. (When you press a convenient button on the battery it shows you roughly how much charge remains).
The charger is also top quality. It indicates when the battery is charged and if it gets too hot.
Toro's manual recommends oiling the blade before and after each use -- more often during long sessions.
The blade comes with a handy plastic scabbard. For safety, I store the trimmer with the scabbard applied and the battery removed.
Weight is good. I'm a normally strong woman- and this handles easily.
It works well in trimming, - but the auto advance doesn't seem to work- and it's not real convenient to pull out the new string.
Another thing is the battery doesn't last as long as I had hoped. I have a pretty traditional yard- front and back trimming around the grass and flower beds and sidewalks - and I have to recharge three times to get the whole yard done. Maybe more convenient just to have gotten another plug in one? At the end of the day, I've had it two weeks and done 4-5 hours of usage so far and I'm not sure I would re purchase- but I'll keep using it and hope it grows on me.
