Don't look for character development. There is no understanding why any of the characters behave the way they do. At the start of the book we know the heroine has spent most of her life being raped by her step-brother and that she orgasms from the rapes. The hero has been sent to jail for eight years after being falsely accused of raping the heroine. So what does he do? He kidnaps and rapes her.
Nothing about the plot is believable and the story ends with the most RIDICULOUS cliffhanger ever.
With this story, the problem lies in the glorification of brutality for no real reason. The excuses are poor while the psychological explanation is completely non-existent. A seemingly complex while really foolish misunderstanding does not justify the actions set forth by these characters. The effort to convince me was just lacking in every possible way. There is nothing glamorous, glorious, or sexual about this entire experience. It is a series of misdirection, misunderstanding, and a general lack of knowledge about the human condition. I could have accepted even really read the story had it provided a basic foundation to empathize with the characters. I felt nothing but apathy.
This story is masquerading as an exploration of the darker fantasies in life. It does not enlighten, enthuse or persuade me at all to get lost in its story. Instead it leaves me questioning every little detail to the point I didn’t get past the first chapters without hitting the forward button just to see if it was really going to keep going. And it did. Worse, there is a second one.
Some detail this as a story of self-discovery, a twisted one at that. This is far from the case. There is no empowerment. The strife is forced while the characters are extremely weak. This story might have worked with better writing and just a better understand of psychology. It wasn’t about convincing me the story was real enough. The book needed to make it so that I didn’t care. It failed to do that never achieving any sort of relevance at all other then to thoroughly confound me.
Alex accused Rafe of raping her 8 years ago and he went to jail for it. He is finally out and wants revenge for being wrongly accused. We find out that the reason why she did it is because Alex had been getting raped by her step brother but was secretly (well not so secretly since her step brother figured it out) in love with Rafe, yet her jealous rapist didn’t want her pursuing him. So, he went to jail for it.
When Rafe kidnaps Alex, sparks fly. No matter what he tries to do to her, she feels like she deserves it and is ready to submit- and damn does she ever 🔥. Even though she agrees with Rafe seeking retribution, she still fights him when she can. Although there were instances of non consensual scenes, we are given the perspectives of both characters to actually understand what is going on in their heads. I mean, I didn’t ever feel like I was hating Rafe; the author does a great job letting us in. Plus, Alex has almost been conditioned to take pleasure in many forms of the pain that has been inflected on her for many years. Rafe is very much 🤤 worthy in Alex’s eyes (and ours too).
I cannot wait to read book 2! The cliffhanger has me on edge.

This thrilling, sensual, twisted love/ hate story will have you on the edge of your seat and on the edge of climax! Gemma James is a talented, sophisticated writer and puts you right there in the moment. The main girl character is relate-able and has a lot of back story, meaning we become very invested in her, we feel her pain and her pleasure. The story is divided, chapter by chapter, between Alex's story and Rafe's story which I usually dislike however it works remarkably well in this story. It also means that men and women alike can become absorbed and aroused in the story!
If you like a sensual, thrilling read then this is perfect! 5 stars from me.
The storyline is intriguing and the characters even more so. They are very well written and I was instantly drawn into the twisted 'relationship' between Rafe and Alex. There are plenty of steamy sex scenes, but the elements of imprisonment and sadism is not for everyone.
I found aspects of how Rafe treated Alex quite uncomfortable, although understandable due to what he went through.
The ending really took me by surprise and i was keen to see what would happen in the next instalment
