"Just as Christians in Russia created an Underground Church after their revolution, the coming to power of communism and the betrayal by many official church leaders compelled us to likewise create in Romania an Underground Church: one faithful to evangelize, preach the gospel, and reach children for Christ. "
-Richard Wurmbrand, from Tortured for Christ.
Tortured for Christ: 50th Anniversary Edition
“If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” ~John 15:20
A timeless and bestselling account of courage, tenacious faith, and unbelievable endurance and forgiveness, this enhanced 50th anniversary edition of Tortured for Christ will inspire believers around the world.
Richard Wurmbrand suffered 14 years in underground prison cells, months in solitary confinement, and years of physical torture. His only crimes were his fervent belief in Jesus Christ and his public witness for that faith. Richard Wurmbrand exposed the persecution of Christians by atheistic Communist governments—his testimony shocked the Western world.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025The truth of this story is compelling and convicting. The parallels in the Western journey pale in comparison and will embarrass the sincere seeker who might think they have it tough. We easily refer to words like torture and deprivation that relate more to an overgrown garden than the realities of Wurmbrand and the underground church. He exposes the “comfortable pew.” Well worth my interest and yours.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022I ordered this book after watching the movie. Highly recommended and easy read! The lettering is bigger then most books I’ve read which makes it a fast easy read in addition to the vocabulary used. The book was delivered in a timely manner and secure packaging.
The book itself goes into some gruesome details about what the author had went through before being part of the underground church, during, and after he was captured and imprisoned. It goes into quite and amount of detail of what he went through after becoming imprisoned but not fully in depth of what he and others had to endure. It’s truly eye opening to what Christians are still enduring in the world today, nearly 80 years later, for the name of Jesus Christ 🙏

- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024This was such a beautiful read, to say the least. As a free country believer, I've been deeply moved by not just the laboring for Christ in the face of active government oppression and torture, but I've also been moved by the genuine show of love both for Christ and for his opposers even in the face of such hardship. It felt like I was reading a letter from Paul but I'm a modern time. I pray for a heart that can act and love like this, and I hope other believers can read this or like stories and be similarly inspired!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2025Every Christian should honor those who have laid their lives down for Christ, by reading books such as these and help support them by prayer and donations.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2017I am in utter awe of the steadfast faith of these Christians who, under the most horrific tortures from atheists, not only kept their faith in God but grew their faith in Jesus all the more. Every Christian should read this book to learn of the torturing that their brothers and sisters in Christ are suffering in atheist countries. Great is their reward in heaven. Let us help them in every way that we can. This book has changed me forever.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022It was amazing Grace that brought Richard Wurmbrand through the horrific torture he endured. He tells graphically of many others who would not recant in any way, shape, or form, and how they were tortured or went on to pay the ultimate price. How lazy we are, how blind, to the radical love of Christ who told us to help the downtrodden, the widows and orphans, and many Christians have the means by which to help, but turn a blind eye to their plight. Have mercy on us, Lord, and drive our lives to new awareness of our tortured brethren in restricted countries. Help us release our hold on finances that we might sacrifice to bind their wounds and supply their needs. Most are just pleading for Bibles and other helps by which to lead their captors to Christ. Amazing Grace.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024I was pleased with how quickly the book came! It was in good condition as was described.
