Although it's a bit predictable, the strength of the characters and their love story made this book feel fresh and fast paced. My heart broke over and over for the main characters for all they lost and all they have to overcome to having a prayer at an HEA.
The story isn't actually quite as dark as I thought it might be though there are some parts that hard to read regarding torture and domestic violence. I thought the author did a very realistic portrayal of what many women go through and are willing to put up with because they don't know another way. And for all those judgy people out there who think this isn't real, you are WRONG! Domestic violence is a huge problem and though Camryn is fictional, I applaud the strength she finally has later in the book. Yes, her character was frustrating but again, it was worth the read to see her growth.
Brecken is pretty amazing, just like all of Nicole's men. This is probably tied for my favorite stand alone from Nicole and he is most of that reason. His strength, his fierce love, his stubbornness... he's a beautiful character.
I'm a sucker for young love/second chance romance and this book will definitely give you all the feels! Highly recommended.
One thing I love about Nicole Williams’ books is that the story can evolve in surprising ways. As the reader you will hurt just as much for what Camryn has endured as you will for Brecken, maybe even more so. She was a very courageous woman, and I understood the decisions that she made and why she made them. The way Brecken stood by her and tried to protect her was beautiful to watch. So much of what he said to her had me in tears. Tortured is hands down one of my favorite books ever by Williams. This one will hurt, but it will be so very worth it in the end
This story touches on some pretty tough subjects but Nicole Williams handles them in an effective yet sensitive manner. I was expecting this to be a super emotional read but it wasn't as devastating to read as I thought it would be.Which is both good and bad. I really wanted this story to gut me (I'm weird like that) given the whole POW aspect of the story but it seemed like the focus of the story was more on Camryn and her struggles and Brecken's battle to win her back.
Which brings us to the highlight of the story, Brecken. Despite everything that he's been through and his battle to reassimilate to life after 6 years as a prisoner of war, his focus is on Camryn, the one thing that kept him fighting to survive and come home. His love for her is endless and his desire to protect her takes precedence over everything else. You'll fall in love with him and everything he does.
This is a story of pain, loss, sacrifice, strength and second chances and is a solid read that fans of Nicole Williams will fall in love with.
What a story. Wow!
Camryn's strength may look as if it is far away, but deep inside, it's right there. I felt for everything she went through, for everything she did. For her love, for her pain, all of it!
