Although it's a bit predictable, the strength of the characters and their love story made this book feel fresh and fast paced. My heart broke over and over for the main characters for all they lost and all they have to overcome to having a prayer at an HEA.
The story isn't actually quite as dark as I thought it might be though there are some parts that hard to read regarding torture and domestic violence. I thought the author did a very realistic portrayal of what many women go through and are willing to put up with because they don't know another way. And for all those judgy people out there who think this isn't real, you are WRONG! Domestic violence is a huge problem and though Camryn is fictional, I applaud the strength she finally has later in the book. Yes, her character was frustrating but again, it was worth the read to see her growth.
Brecken is pretty amazing, just like all of Nicole's men. This is probably tied for my favorite stand alone from Nicole and he is most of that reason. His strength, his fierce love, his stubbornness... he's a beautiful character.
I'm a sucker for young love/second chance romance and this book will definitely give you all the feels! Highly recommended.
The description of this book on the sales page had me excitedly downloading this one. It ended up being a pretty enjoyable read… but it wasn’t enough like the description that I was really satisfied. I wanted to see more “determination” from Brecken to get his love back. And I wanted to see more “going against the warden of Camryn’s personal prison.” (Did this ever even happen?)
Even though it was implied in the back cover description that this was the case… I found myself frustrated that Camryn was totally content to just go with the flow, even though the love of her life is a mere thirty feet away and her life is in danger. As in, rescue and safety are RIGHT THERE but you refuse it. And Brecken was content enough as well and not because he’s been broken from war, but because he’s trying to do the “right thing” I guess.
Their reasons for resisting each other just weren’t strong enough. I wasn’t convinced! The big reveal/climax of the book had the potential to be a huge moment but it felt a little disappointing (and was nearly word for word out of one of my favorite movies, haha). I really loved parts of this book but overall it just wasn’t for me. Admittedly I like romance novels that are a bit more aggressive and this one was on the sweeter side of contemporary. I think that would really work for some readers, just not for me.
This was a nice read and well-written. Highly recommended for readers of romance who love second chance romance, childhood sweetheart romance, ex-soldier romance, and tortured hero/heroine love stories.
You start the book, and your heart will absolutely break for these characters - each and every single one, even the ones you want to hate. This book contains abuse, but it's not a generic story of bad guy beats good girl...you get to pull back the curtains on the bad boy a bit, and it hurts your heart to see where his issues are stemming from. He's not the story, though.
The story is about a wounded soldier and the girl whose life fell apart while she tried to hold together the tattered pieces of her heart in his absence. As they come back together, old secrets are uncovered and they find their way through the pain and the damage. The ending will satisfy everything you secretly hoped for as you read the story.
This one is emotional, and deep, and so, so worth it.
What a story. Wow!
Camryn's strength may look as if it is far away, but deep inside, it's right there. I felt for everything she went through, for everything she did. For her love, for her pain, all of it!
