The 4TB model has very fast access time, that is why it makes audible seek noises when accessing lots of small files. Both of my 4TB drives measured just under 12ms in random access performance. This - not linear transfer rate - is the difference between a fast hard drive and a slower one. Linear transfer rates will be similar for most contemporary 7200rpm drives.
The 3TB model is a completely different design. It tests just over 15ms random access. This is typical of most hard drives, and as a result, it is quieter. I've included an image of the performance test I ran on both 3TB and 4TB models side by side, unfortunately Amazon has shrunk the image and it isn't legible. It was meant to show the 12ms vs 15ms difference between the models.
I've also included an image of 2 performance tests solely on the 4TB PH3400U. One is a test across the disk's full capacity, the other is a test of a 2TB partition, which is sometimes the maximum that can be used on some setups.

Read on if you want a longer explanation of how different the 3TB and 4TB models are.

I've purchased one of the 3TB model and 2 of the 4TB model. Both of my 4TB drives were purchased from this listing in retail packaging. My 3TB was purchased as a bare drive but it's the same drive that comes in the PH3300U retail box.
I've been using the 3TB drive for a bit over a year, and the 4TB drives for 3-5 months (bought at different times). I recently checked the SMART status on these drives and they are all working perfectly. This review will mostly focus on the 4TB model.

First note - if you are using Windows XP 32-bit, the 4TB drive will not even be visible unless you use a utility like HDAT2 to artificially limit it's reported capacity to 2TB.

After a lot of review reading and research into larger capacity hard drives, I settled on this Toshiba because of the size to price ratio, low power consumption, and the 7200rpm spindle speed.

There seems to be a huge reliability problem with large 1TB plus drives on the market, I had a very hard time finding consistent good reviews on ANY manufacturer. I was seriously considering a Western Digital "Green" drive, to use in my Home Theater PC, but this was going to serve as my main operating system drive as well as storage, the slowish speeds concerned me. I found this Toshiba (yes it is a re-branded Hitachi) on sale, and most of the reviews seemed favorable, so I bought it.

I've had it for about 4 months, and it is getting close to full already, let me say this; the drive is fast, seemingly reliable, and I'm very happy with it. I got the retail box for the manufacturer's warranty, to be safe, but seems like a terrific drive. My system boots fast, has no problem reading and playing high def video, and it is QUIET, and according to the specs (I have no real way to test this) power friendly, which is what I need for a Home Theater machine.

Highly recommended product.
Thank you for reading my review.

I installed this hard drive into my PC and had little problem setting it up in Windows 7. I am using this as a media drive for my HTPC. The drive formats to yield 1.8 TBs of usable space. For those of you who are not familiar with the bit conversion - 1 Gigabyte equals 1,024 megabytes so you will always have less usable space than what the drive advertises. I still can load thousands of movies and songs.

This is a SATA drive and it does not come with a data cable so make sure you have one. I had to order an additional data cable as I have three SATA devices and my board only came with two cables. Also, make sure your power supply (PSU) has the appropriate SATA connector or you will have purchase a molex to SATA converter.

I wish I could endorse the durability and stability of this drive but I am reviewing due to Amazon's prompting only having owned the hardware for a month. I still would recommend this hard drive as it was inexpensive for the amount of data that it can hold.

This is my second drive as I sent the first one back, but I hope Toshiba will respond as I feel I have received a drive that I didn't intend to purchase. The label on the front of this retail drive states it's a 4TB, 7200rpm, 64mb Cache (not the 128mb that was advertised). The label on the bottom of the box lists the P/N: as PH3400U-1|72 and the S/N on the sticker matches the drive, however the P/N: on the actual drive is HDETR11GEA51 along with MD04ACA400. If you google these two numbers all you get is 64mb cache drives, not 128. See my pictures below. So TOSHIBA and AMAZON what is going on here????

Thank you for the review, Dutch, and sorry for the confusing labeling regarding the cache size of this drive.

The storage products team has ensured me that this is just a labeling error on the box which has been corrected. The MD04ACA400 part number is assigned to the bare drive and is used for sales to OEMs (device manufacturers who use this hard disk as part of systems they build and sell, such as PCs.) Before Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. sells these same drives in retail packaging, those retail packages are assigned a new part number, which is PH3400U-1I72 in the case of this particular drive.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the confusing label error.

UPDATE: I'm appending this original post of 3/21/15 on 4/8/15 to reiterate my original response that there was an error on earlier versions of the retail packaging and to add that the same error existed in documentation for the OEM part number of MD04ACA400, which was then duplicated on many websites -- thus the Google search results that seem to "confirm" the 64MB size but are themselves also in error.

The actual cache size of 128MB has now been confirmed by multiple parties in our Storage Products Division, as reported by our corporate office. I understand the credibility problem given the multiple layers of errors, but I can also assure you that the actual cache size is irrefutably 128MB.

Sorry for the documentation errors that created the controversy and confusion.

I have been in the communications field as a technician, engineer and as a Director of Operations & Technology Director for over 30-years. Though now twice retired, (Military & IT Business) I still build systems for myself, my friends and my family. I am very happy with the operational characteristics of the Toshiba Hard Drive. It is very quiet, it runs cool under heavy use, it serves A/V files to my XBox 360 and to 4 other networked Multimedia computers and like all SATA drives, it was very simple to install.

For a competant durability report, and as this is a recent purchase and installation, I can only go by the stated MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) ratings from Toshiba and outside sources and also state that I own and operate several other Toshiba hard drives. All of them are 5 to 6-years old and are in heavy use systems. So-far, I have not had a Toshiba Hard Drive failure (Knock-On-Wood).

This new 2 Tera Byta Toshiba hard drive is great. I am so happy with it, that I just ordered another one just like it. (I am gradually replacing my 12-14 500 GB Hard Drives with newer, faster, and larger capasity 1 TB & 2 TB drives.) I am using Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB drives for the boot drives with a 250 -:- 750 split partition and the monster Toshiba 2 TB drives for storage & A/V drives.

I remember many years ago in the late 80's when I bought what was then a "state-of-the-art" and very expensive 40 MB external hard drive with separate enclosure and power supply (For an Apple IIE) and all my friends told me it was a waste of money, "No One could every fill up a 40 MB hard Drive!"

Today while goofing off at [...] I downloaded just over 5 GB of public domain video and short films.

From KB to MB to GB to TB storage we go.
