The Canon 7D is notoriously difficult to use with Wireless SD Memory Cards because of its metal body. But it works fantastically with the Toshiba 32 GB FlashAir III Wireless SD Memory Card!
With this card, anytime I want to immediately send photos I have just taken to family in a text message, I can transfer the photos from my Canon 7D to my iPhone. I don't have to wait to download the photos to a computer.
I bought the following:
* EYE-FI CERTIFIED COMPACT FLASH TYPE II ADAPTER FOR EYEFI MOBI CARDS (SDCCFA-C15) (http://www.amazon.com/Eye-Fi-Certified-Compact-Adapter-SDCCFA-C15/dp/B012DBYX4W?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage)
* TOSHIBA 32GB FLASHAIR III WIRELESS SD MEMORY CARD, WHITE,(PFW032U-1CCW) (http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-FlashAir-Wireless-Memory-PFW032U-1CCW/dp/B00UOYPZP2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01)
* FLASHAIR APP by Toshiba Corp from the iOS App Store.
SETUP:
* Set my Canon 7D to remain powered-on until I manualy turn it off. This allows the Toshiba WiFi SD Card to create a network that is online until I have finished viewing and downloading my photos.
* On my iPhone: go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
* Turn Wi-Fi on.
* Select the Toshiba WiFi SD Card as the network
* Go to the FlashAir App on the iPhone.
* The App will connect to the Toshiba WiFi SD Card through its network.
* The App will ask for a password. The default is 12345678. The App will ask you to change the password for your privacy.
THEN WHENEVER I WANT TO VIEW AND TRANSFER MY PHOTOS TO MY iPHONE:
* Set my Canon 7D to remain powered-on until I manualy turn it off. This allows the WiFi SD Card to create a network that is online until I have finished viewing and downloading my photos.
* On my iPhone: go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
* Turn Wi-Fi on.
* Select the Toshiba WiFi SD Card as the network
* Go to the FlashAir App on the iPhone.
* The App will connect to the Toshiba WiFi SD Card through its network.
* Once connected, you can then view previews of your photos.
* Select one photo. It will then download. Once downloaded, you may then save the photo to your iPhone Photos collection.
* Once saved you can use other apps to edit the photos, then send it to whomever you want including sending it in a text message.
The advantages of the Toshiba 32GB FlashAir III are:
* A lot cheaper than the Eye-Fi versions
* Allows you to pick specific photos to transfer to your iPhone. This is unlike the Eye-Fi which is built to simply transfer all photos to your computer or iPhone. You can always later download all your photos to your computer. But when you want to just pick out a few and send them immediately, Toshiba works really well.
* Simple to use. No need for an online account like Eye-Fi.
* Large capacity SD cards make it easy to simply stop using CompactFlash cards and use only Toshiba FlashAir III Wireless SD Memory Cards.
I'm buying one for each of my other cameras which don't already have WiFi capability. And even if they did, the Toshiba is SO EASY TO USE, I think I prefer it to more complicated solutions.
They are so inexpensive and easy to use. It is a no brainer.
Hardware: Nikon d5200, flashair 32gb, samsung note 3.
Pair your phone to the flash air first off! (note, if you format your flashair, your screwed. you need the flashair utility from toshiba and also whipe out the settings on your phone so you can start fresh!)
setup:
D5200-setting this up to work
1. set dial from auto mode to no flash, then menu->custom settings menu, timers/aelock->auto off timers->custom-> standby timer to 30 minutes. you can also do the playback/menus 10 minutes which is needed to keep device alive also incase you like having the screen on for longer periods of time. (obviously when camera goes on standby, you have stopped picture transfers.)
2. menu->playback menu->playback all(do not delete the wifi on or off image at all.) to turn on and off wifi, use the playback button and look for the wifi jpg image when your playing back images. hit the key(lock or image protection button) you can image protect on to turn off wifi and image protect off to turn on wifi. Make sure you also use the flashair utility from pc or the app from the playstore, flashair app from store. In the app, after you log into your wifi card, go into settings->flashair settings->wireless lan auto start settings->remove check mark. remember that if you do this on a phone, the only way to activate flashair wifi automatically at start (aFTER 5 MINUTES) is through the flashair utility on the pc. THis flashair utility can be downloaded form toshiba to reconfigure your flashair card or to reset to factory specs.
Samsung note 3 latest firmware-
1. disable "smart network switch"
2. install flashair app.
then it works!
so the sequence of transfering images to phone goes like this. TUrn on the camera, view your pictures and look for the jpeg that has the wifi lock and unlock. Protect image (on my d5200, its the ae-l/af-l button) unprotect the image to turn on wifi. Make sure your phone has the wifi running. load the flashair app, and it will find your wifi and you can start to download. note, you need to leave camera in playback mode or it will go to sleep during transfers. also, you may need to setup your phone so standby mode doesnt affect your transfers.
ConS!
sometimes the camera defaults to menu playback folder d5200. you will need to switch this to "ALL" to turn wifi on and off.
hope this helps people I see complaining about this. So many people who don't do research.
Top reviews from other countries
It arrived just in a box without any instructions, have figured out how to do it with the help of comments on Amazon. You just need to download a free app called FlashAir on your phone and turn on Wifi.
The app that comes with it, is very intuitive and easy to use.
Transfer speeds are a bit slow for big files but no big deal.
Currently using a nikon D5200 and galaxy S7 edge.
Password for WiFi setup is 12345678.
