*** 2014 March 14 Update: The above problem happened again. It seems if you let the battery drain down to "critical" and the laptop hibernates, something goes wrong and it won't "wake up" again, sometimes. The power button won't turn it back on. But I found a better solution. Charge the battery up (the lights on the front still will work and indicate charging (red) and full charge (green)). Once it's charged. Turn it over (upside down) and right about where your left thumb is, on the bottom, you will see a very tiny hole - just the size for a paperclip wire to fit into. Push a paperclip wire into this hole *gently* until you strike bottom and press *gently* and you will "reset" the computer battery/power status (same as I did by letting it die completely above, but this is much quicker and easier). Now it will turn on and work normally. To avoid this, never allow the battery to run down to "critical" (i.e. keep it charged or turn it off completely when not in use). Since this thing boots in seconds, not a real problem. I just forgot and left mine on over night and not plugged in.
After much use, I still like this laptop a lot. My only real complaint is that the keyboard has some flex and occasionally a key will not register (especially the space bar if you hit it on the ends rather than the center). But other than that, I love it. Great performance and wonderful wide screen is a real treat. A good buy at less than $500 if you can still find one. ***
UPDATE: 2014-07-01 I use this laptop every day and it continues to work fine. The keyboard is not the best, but it is tolerable and not too bad. But the laptop is snappy in use, works well, and I continue to enjoy the unusually wide screen since I often have multiple windows/programs running at once. Makes things much easier. Other good choices are available now, but this is still a decent laptop if you find one cheap.
If you catch this on sale it's a steal, it's a good value even at the "regular" discounted price. See my review of the same model with 256 GB SSD and i7 CPU here: Toshiba Satellite U845W-S414 14.4-Inch Ultrabook (Midnight Silver)
The two machines are identical except for the CPU and SSD. The i5 in this model is quite capable as well and you get more storage in the 500 GB HDD. For the price you get an excellent, solid and very well built ultrabook with great performance and a lot of nice features, like three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI out port, the unique 21:9 wide screen display and very nice styling. The is a very attractive ultrabook and for productivity uses, it performs very, very well. The side-by-side windows are a treat for daily tasks and combined with the excellent speakers makes watching videos or listening to music a great experience. The speakers sound very good and are a big plus. Nearly all the comments in my other review apply to this model as well.
Text is clear and easy to read even at the 100% default setting, you can boost to 125% if you like, but even with my old, tired eyes I did not feel the need to do so. Also, one of the nicest looking Ultrabooks (in my opinion) around. Easy to carry and handle, too. Very sleek. The rubberized surfaces are wonderful - every one should copy Toshiba on this aspect.
A top performer (excellent benchmarks) and an excellent value at the current discounted pricing.
**(Update: Discounted no more, alas!)**
*** 2015-01-11 Update: Although my unit has developed some occasional keyboard issues (e.g. missed key press with spacebar). it nevertheless remains my daily workhorse. The light weight, great screen, solid build and speedy response make it great for everyday tasks (I am on it a lot during a typical day). Not perfect, but has been a good laptop for me. Also the much better than average sound quality is a big plus for me. Perfect for music, Netflix and such.
Its CPU matches new macbook airs. It has 6GB of ram. It's really light and thin. It is almost as portable as a netbook, as powerful as a desktop and the screen makes it trump everything else when it comes to travel. I bought mine for $650 after lots of comparison shopping. Highly recommend.
The bad, first of all this laptop is rather pricy, if I had not gotten $450 off the suggested retail price I would never have bought it. Second, this computer runs very hot most of the time and the exhaust vents are on the bottomside of the back so if you don't have it on a table, desk, tray etc, you'll have it on your lap meaning all that heat is going right on you which makes it very uncomfortable, especially if it's already a hot day. My third complaint is the mousepad, the pad itself isn't the problem, but the buttons don't seem to know their left from their right. Many times when I'm clicking the left mouse button, it registers as the right and vice versa. This can be very annoying when you're just simply trying to click something and the right mouse button options come up and takes moving the curser and several clicks of the left button to go away.
Also this laptop's lack of a CD rom drive is more inconveiniant than I thought it would be. So if you buy this one, do yourself a favor and buy a cordless mouse and an external DVD/CD drive to go along with it.
All in all, I'd say this would be a good laptop for someone who travels a lot for business, but I would not reccomend it for home or office use. That, the high price and the cons vs the pros is why I only gave this product 3 stars.
Thought I would have a problem with no CD drive, but that has not been an issue. The 3 USB connections take care of that. The keyboard is touchy though...if I oress too hard with the base of my hand, some of the keys don't pick up all the strokes and I have to go back. It needs a lighter touch I guess. The backlit keys are great when I get to the later part of the day. Light weight and easy to carry. ...problem that did come up is trying to find a protective case for it...very wide and not tall...just not a size that is out there as much .
