The book begins with a discussion of the general paradigms and mental models important to lean and kaizen. This is a good introduction for the reader new to lean manufacturing and lean logistics, and always a good review for more advanced readers. Before diving into the details of applying lean principles to streamlining internal and external logistics, the author establishes the need for basic reliability, stability and other key enablers including standard work, line and layout design, quick changeovers, low-cost automation and material replenishment (called Border of Line).
The final 50 pages of the book turn theory into practice, detailing how to implement these concepts beginning with current state analysis, setting KPIs (key performance indicators) and designing the future state map. The appendices provide additional practical and useful examples of kanban systems and their loops and calculations, logistics planning algorithms, and a Total Flow Management self-assessment scorecard.
Future editions of this book could be improved by providing a glossary of the key terms and concepts contained within it.
