In the late aughts, Kathleen Edwards’ career was on the rise and her four studio albums had received critical acclaim; she garnered Polaris Prize nominations, a SOCAN Songwriting prize win, and several Juno nominations. But amid this success she stepped back from the music industry and started a coffee shop outside of Ottawa called Quitters, a successful small business she ran for over a decade. Now, she’s releasing album number five, just as a global pandemic has forced her to shut down the coffee shop and furlough the workers who became like family. 'Total Freedom,' self-produced alongside Jim Bryson and Grammy winner Ian Fitchuk, opens a door to her view of life as it is now, with all its wonderful complications.

I need not have worried. Since she first released Failer, we have seen Kathleen's music on an upward trajectory. Each album has been an advance on the last. The fallow period has allowed Kathleen to reassess her life and recharge. This album is a joy from beginning to end. From opener Glenfern "we bought the rock 'n roll dream, it was total crap" through songs like the delicate, beautiful Birds On A Feeder, the celebratory Options Open, the regret of Feelings Fade and much more. It's a box of gems.
You know you love an album when it ends and you play it again. This is on regular repeat for me.
Since then I have purchased all her albums (five) and found a new singer to rave about. How has she escaped my attention before I don't know, brilliant. By the way I give nobody top marks - everybody can improve, can't they.
Brilliant cd. Arrived during timespan quoted by Uniqueplace-uk. Well packaged.
