Bamboo is gentler on knives than plastic and easier to clean and maintain than hardwood— it cleans quickly with hand washing in warm water.
Bamboo is harder than maple and even has a higher tensile strength than steel.
As a grass, its roots remain and quickly regrows after harvest. It's grown organically even on difficult terrain without pesticides, artificial irrigation or re-planting.
Bamboo is better for the Earth. It releases more oxygen than a similarly-sized stand of trees. Its root system helps to prevent erosion. And the Moso bamboo used by Totally Bamboo is not a part of the panda's diet.
Bamboo from the Beginning
Totally Bamboo has long led the way in beautiful, innovative bamboo kitchen solutions.
The company's founders, Tom and Joanne Sullivan, are artists who created the first bamboo cutting boards as gifts for friends and family from the scraps of their original products, director’s chairs. The cutting boards were lightweight, strong and had outstanding knife feel. The boards were such hits, Tom and Joanne discovered they were onto something special and Totally Bamboo was born.
Totally Bamboo stands behind their product quality. For any questions or issues, their California-based support staff is always happy to help.

I don't think it's really as big some say but is a good size and shape to open one handed pretty easily. Quality is great, it's solid, closed nice a snug as it should. It looks good too. It's got more than enough space in each section for what I have, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Obviously I don't grind a lot of pepper at a time so there's more than enough room.
A note about the claims that it's loose and doesn't close snugly. I discovered by accident, that it appears the lid is attached to the screw/rod or whatever it is that the 2 sections and lid pivot on. If you open it counterclockwise you are unscrewing it thus is gets looser. If you continue to spin it counter clockwise, or try to close it by spinning it all the way around, it'll be loose, very loose. If you try to open it clockwise, it should feel very tight, as if it's getting tighter....it is an may not open.
Open it counter clockwise and close it back clockwise and it makes it easy to open the top and the 2 sections, but snugs back up perfectly. Hopefully that is by design and cures some of the loose salt box issues.
I'm very happy with it.
Same seems to be the case for this salt box - pleasant to look at, pleasant to touch, love the little magnetic "lock" (the lid snaps in the closed position).
I initially wanted a salt box similar to what Alton Brown uses on his Good Eats show. But then I thought: I don't want a vessel I have to hold to open it - I want a vessel I could open with 1 hand without lifting it off the counter and also close it the same way - this is it!
I do wish it was a bit bigger, 3.5" is ok, but you have to keep it filled. I figure that if your salt level reaches less than half it'll be hard to reach in and grab a pinch. It's fairly thick, so it's really less than 3" on the inside - a little smaller than I pictured it. But I'm not taking any stars away for this, just mentioning.
Really nice item, IMO.
Although this had a noticeable odor when it arrived the odor wasn't different than other pressed bamboo products I've bought. Two thorough washings with soap and hot water and the smell is gone.
Regarding other reviews I read here: the magnets worked on the version I received (though the wood is unfinished so it scratches whenever you move it). I think it's really just a gamble on whether this arrives functional or not. It seems like a lot of it could be avoided if they just used a box instead of an envelope.
