I started with a single box to try it out. I was so pleased with how well it worked that I bought three more right away. All four boxes worked flawlessly. I couldn't have hoped for a better result.
EASE OF USE -- After applying the first box of spray foam I couldn't figure out how so many other reviewers struggled with this system. The instructions could not be clearer. Remove the hose...pull the first tab...pull the second tab and lock in into place...squeeze the trigger...done. At first I was a bit skeptical that the plastic trigger mechanism would be responsive, but it worked very well. I was able to control the flow of foam without issue. You can do this.
TEMPERATURE -- I live in Wisconsin and it is freezing cold at the moment -- like -20°F cold. After carefully reading the included instructions I was a bit nervous about applying this stuff to the cold box sills. Fortunately, the foam adhered to the boards extremely well. One thing I was sure to do before applying the foam, however, was get the package above the 70°F recommended temperature. If you live in a cold climate make sure you get the box in front of a heat register or space heater for a full day after delivery before even attempting to apply the foam.
COVERAGE -- The product description states that you can get 15 board feet (1 foot x 1 foot x 1 inch) of coverage with a single box. While I'm sure this is technically true, it is very difficult to keep the foam at 1 inch thick. I would plan on getting closer to 10-12 board feet per box.
CLOGGING -- The instructions very clearly indicate that you can't stop spraying for more than 30 seconds without having the nozzle clog up on you. Because of this, I was sure to have the entire basement prepped before I started. At no point did I have to worry about the nozzle clogging, but even if I did, it isn't the end of the world because the package comes with an extra nozzle. If you were planning on using this system in multiple locations with several minutes passing between applications you might want to try something else. This is clearly designed as a one-time use.
SAFETY -- I've read that this is pretty nasty stuff, so I was sure to wear gloves (which come in the package) and a painter's suit to protect my clothes. On my first application, however, I didn't heed the product warnings and chose to not wear a mask. Big mistake. I could tell almost immediately that I goofed because the fumes were powerful...but because of the 30-second clogging issue referenced above, I didn't have time to put a mask on. I was light-headed for a solid hour after applying the foam. When I applied the next three boxes a few days later I was sure to wear a relatively cheap, disposable mask and I didn't have any problems.
END RESULT -- As other reviews have stated, this stuff dries almost instantly. If you go through a whole box in one use you can expect the first areas you sprayed to be set once you've finished. So far, it seems like this stuff has totally solved the drafty conditions in the box sills. I'm still going to add batt insulation for an extra layer of protection, but I feel much better about overall coverage after using this product.
To me it worked as described and worked great.
I have bought an applicator gun for the other stuff but I haven't used it yet. The stuff available in the store is much less expensive.
In the end it worked out and I did get some R-value into the walls.
