Very Important Book for Keen Meditators

What makes Reggie Ray interesting is that he wholeheartedly stands outside the traditional 'protestant' practices and views of orthodox buddhism. He is after all a genuine acolyte of the iconclastic Chogyam Trungpa. So what is refreshing and fairly unique about Reggie's view of the path is his clear view that the body itself is the path to enlightenment. He explains clearly just how the body is the means to enlightenment. Ray asserts, "Our body, in everything that it is, is an expression of the sacredness of the universe, perfect and free. What is quite amazing is that this understanding is not theoretical, nor does it come through our thinking mind; it is a matter of our own direct, fully embodied, personal experience." At an experiental level this can be found to be true. Indeed, when this is realized, it overturns our previous understandings of reality in both an overwhelming and utterly ordinary way.

His basic premise at the beginning of the book is very important: that many long time practitioners reach an impasse in the meditation. That is, after decades of meditation, many practitioners have not attained full realization. Ray shows us why in a stunning discovery that when we find "our very own body is nothing other than the trikaya, or three bodies of enlightenment, the three bodies of the Buddha", realization becomes entirely possible.

If you want to have a harmonic mind, body, and spirit connection, this book offers a path. If you want to know your true nature i.e. love, this book offers the stepping stones. If you want to "be" what is possible...practice what is in this book every day. Namaste...

Life beyond preconception or idea

I discovered Reginald Ray in Tricycle magazine, a Buddhist journal. In a recent issue he told about his relationship to his teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and to the teacher's legacy. I identified with Ray's journey in following and learning from a person who "blazed with awareness" and discovering after his death that he had to find his own way to carry on that legacy. Having read all of Trungpa's books myself, I was interested in Ray's approach after he left Shambhala and Naropa University and formed Dharma Ocean Foundation. This book is a summation of that approach. The book is about the Buddhist lineage but feels like depth psychology and has a somatic emphasis. Buddhism has always emphasized the body, but it is easy to get lost in thoughts about the body. Certainly in the modern Western world we can, as Ray says, "be of the opinion that conceptual knowing is subordinate, but not, in fact, function in that way." The block, says Ray, is the ego, which "must be dethroned, its arrogance must be dismantled." He goes so far as to suggest that we may have to abandon "discursive thinking - disembodiment - as our primary way of orienting ourselves in the world" and express ourselves differently. We "must be willing to speak of our experience, to speak our hearts. We must speak openly about our practice and our lives, without hesitation and without excusing or justifying ourselves - where we have become lost . . our tragedies . . our hopes and fears - all of it." He says that thus we will make possible a new human culture.

Ray says upfront that you can't really write about spirituality, as it tempts one into the very substitution of thinking for life itself that he is writing about. Nevertheless, his writing can clarify the mind and inspire the spirit to move in daily practice toward embodied awareness. And he describes for us the path of dethroning the ego including the "good news" of chaos and the necessity of falling apart - because ultimately the ego is "like a suit of armor that is way too small." He shows us the possibility of experiencing the vitality of life flowing through us in such a powerful way that we can feel we have found our true life beyond any preconception or idea.

An excellent guide to either initiating or deepening the awakened experience! Having a background and practice in mindfulness meditation, non-dual teachings, and other eastern traditions including Taoism and Zen, this book ignited the next phase of my spiritual path. In case anyone can relate to the "conceptually awake" place that non-dual teachings had taken me to and if you want to go further, this book is a perfect next-step to fuller embodiment and getting it beyond just the mind. The book is a great map, and the practices when done consistently will get you there.

I highly recommend this book and the author's website with its dozens of free talks and guided meditations.

How to Feel Your F-ing Feelings!

If you're f-ing tired of trying to "figure things out" or analyzing your life or trying to "understand it all", this book might offer some much needed relief. Thoughts, words, language are so messy! I've spent so much time trying to question and clear "negative beliefs" - its so exhausting - but I did it to try to cure my "addictions". I finally figured out that logic and words weren't going to help me "feel better" - only feeling your pain will. Ultimately, the feeling part has to be done by "you" but this is a wonderful guide to helping you do so. This book is very beautifully written, and it will probably be a book I read a 2nd time (quite rare for a voracious reader like myself). Enjoy and I hope this helps!

Reggie has done what few other western buddhists have been able to. This book is a game changer. I have been meditating for 15 years and only know through finding this book and his teachings have I found the lineage that I will stick with, it is what I was looking for. To beginner meditators interested in the buddhism and/or the body and its innate intelligence, skip the rest, start with the best, proceed straight to the secrets inside, this is the way. IMHO.
