Minnesota for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Project Manhigh. I also
had the distinct pleasure of meeting Dr. David Simons as well. This is a
story that needed to be told and Mr Kennedy has done just that with an
evident amount of research, technical data and a wonderful array of photo
graphic content. The read is also entertaining in places as well so it
does not become strained reading in regards to the technical issues. I
came away shaking my head wondering how they ever talked a man, in 1957
no less, to travel to the edge of space and actually believing that this would become not only a successful but a historical event. This book and
its story portray the vision of mankind and the guts of few.
The book includes some neat pictures of the hardware that made these flights possible, flight path charts and cutaway drawings of the capsules used. This latter quality is fundamentally what earns it the 5 star rating in my book. Although the book could have a longer than 2 page index, this a minor issue for most readers.
The book closes with a brief touch on how Manhigh segued into Project Excelsior, which lifted Project Manhigh veteran Joseph Kittinger to his famous "highest step in the world".
