The good: -the core i7-4700qm is lightning fast, seriously it outperforms even my wildest expectations daily and I haven't yet needed to over clock it so I imagine it will still blow me away for a long time to come.
-8 GB ram expandable to 16 GB
-Integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics is a massive, massive step up from past incarnations, just don't expect it to compare to a laptop with a discrete GPU.
-touchscreen is a nice, but not entirely necessary, addition.
The bad: -Integrated graphics will never compare to discrete GPUs limiting this laptops gaming capabilities, but this isn't a gaming laptop anyway
-Windows 8 isn't exactly the most user friendly OS and has a steep initial learning curve compared to past Windows incarnations, but once you get the hMg of it it's not bad at all
-Battery life is abysmal when doing anything more than browsing the web, I get about 3-4 hours out of a full charge when watching HD videos
-trackpad is one of the worst I've used, get a wireless mouse if you plan on getting this laptop and save yourself hours of frustration
-display is only 1366x768, not quite 720p. It looks beautiful, crisp and clear considering it's resolution however.
Overall, this is an incredibly powerful and capable laptop, especially given it's sub $800 price. It performs like a champ and can breeze through anything I throw at it. The downsides are, for me at least, just minor things with the exception of the horrible battery life. All in all, I love this laptop and cannot recommend it enough.
Things I like
I choose the HP Envy Touchsmart for the touch screen and the memory.
The touch screen works very well but I am still getting used to it. The computer is over all much faster. Lots of people complained about the track pad but it seems to work just fine for me. The speakers are really awesome for a laptop and I love being able to split my screen between the desktop and whatever app I want to use.
My one major complaint
This computer comes loaded with ad software. I could barely use the internet when I first got it. Stuff popped up everywhere. So the very first thing I did was to uninstall a ton of software devoted to advertising. Then I installed an ad blocker and a popup blocker.
Like all new computers getting it set up to work the way I wanted it to took several hours, and I am still two weeks later working on some of the finer points.
Anyway overall a great computer I am really happy with it.
Edit (A year later)
I have had this computer for about a year. In that time I have had it repaired twice. One of which I had to do a month after the warranty expired. The finger print scanner stopped working five months in and I could not be bothered to fix it because it always takes forever to get any repairs done and I really need my computer for work.
When I bought this it seemed like I was getting a lot of computer for a small amount of money, but with all the money I spent on repairs I could have bought a Mac with equivalent computing power. Macs in general appear to have sturdier hardware, and they don't come loaded with adware.
I will not buy an Hp again the poor quality hardware is a real deal breaker, especially when my computer is by far the most important thing I own.
