They stay in stylish hotels and dine at plush restaurants. I surmise the author is being treated in return for her being a prominent travel writer..
(This is in contrast with my own ride over the Route des Grandes Alpes in 2006, pedalling from Nice to Geneva. We carried a tent and dined wherever we could in magnificent villages.) The duo in `A Tour of the Heart' do get out on numerous great rides, with Pete summiting Mt. Ventoux, a key climb of Tour de France. They dine well, enjoy great wine, and later join up in France for a second time to enjoy a Tour de France conclusion at a time when Lance Armstrong is still in favour.
Throughout, the writer is keen for a lasting relationship. I won't give anything away here.
As a tour guide though, I reckon Pete is occasionally overwhelmed.
Cycling is a key part of the story but often takes a back seat to hotels, food, and a relationship. For all that the story is a compelling read. Attending the final stage of Tour de France riders arriving at Champs Elysee is a highlight, given the duo did not have the best of official passes.
The story concludes back in America, offering some surprises.
My own French cycling tour was in search of the origins of a liver- punishing liqueur in the Chartreuse mountains. (The story is in `Pedal Power, great bicycle journeys' available via Amazon Kindle.)
I've always dreamed of going to Paris, sipping coffee in an outdoor cafe. Now lets add riding an awesome bike with a large basket, stopping at an outdoor market grabbing a big bunch of flowers and off I go..
Thank you for writing this beautiful story.
