About the author

I grew up in Malone, NY in the Adirondack Moutains and had the good fortune of attending a one room schoolhouse for the first 6 years of my education. I have lived for many years in Buffalo, NY where I am a retired teacher of 33 years. I have been involved working with children with Tourette Syndrome (TS), OCD and associated disorders for 26 years. I have presented workshops on TS in 48 of the 50 states, 4 countries and 2 languages. My past work in this field includes publishing many, many brochures, videos and curriculums on the topic of educating students with TS and accompanying disorders. I started with my first symptoms of Tourette Syndrome at age 6 and was not diagnosed until age 36. Many members of my family also have TS. I consider myself to be so blessed by the thousands of children and adults with TS whom I have met. Their lives have not been easy and they are some of the most courageous people I know. It is these people whose lives you will find on every page of this book and who have taught me so much about this baffling disorder.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2018This has to be one of the best if not the best books that explains Tourette Syndrome and its related conditions. I personally love that it is written in easy-to-understand language and though it is chocked full of great info without being overwhelming.
I have been reading many books on TS and this stands out as a favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2011i am so grateful for sue conners. this book touches on all aspects of tourette syndrome from basic overall information, the disorders that are associated with tourette syndrome, suggestions for parents and teachers. since toureete syndrome manifests differently in each individual, there is no cookie-cutter solution to certain scenarios that may develop. she gives examples at the end of the book of creative ways to handle different symptoms of tourettes. i highly recommend this book to anyone wanting more knowledge about this disorder and i have used and will continue to do so for help with my 14 year old son.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2011Whether you are very familiar with Tourette Syndrome, or are just learning, this book is a helpful guide to understanding TS and some of the common accomodations that can be used in a school setting. As a teacher and someone who has Tourette herself, Ms Conners understands firsthand the daily issues people with Tourette face. Behavior checklists and sample letters for IEP's are helpful additions. Whether you are a teacher, student or administration, you will find helpful explanations and guidance.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2016As a parent of a special needs child recently diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors, this book was a HUGE HUGE HELP! I started reading this book andbi could not put it down. I found myself saying, "Oh my goodness! I've been trying to say this for SO LONG!" and "Right! That's totally my son!" and "That's why he does that? It all makes sense now!!!"
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019This book helped me a ton as a parent and has also been a great resource for the elementary school!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2015It is a great book but mainly for teachers. About 1/2 the book is for teachers, I was hoping more would be geared toward parents since I homeschool my children. But for public schoolers this is a great resource to be sure your child has the best possible experience in school.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2018As a parent of two children that have Tourette Syndrome and OCD, this book is definitely a must have. I would buy copies for every teacher they have from here on out if I thought they would read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2013Very informative and helpful as a parent and also for teachers! I bought this book before we moved to a new town, so I could educate my daughter's 4th grade teacher and the new school if needed. I learned a lot from this book as a parent.

rha28Reviewed in Spain on April 11, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Very complete
I bought this book to help me to recognise and understand my son who has Tourette's (TS). There are 5 sections to the book plus an appendix each of which are broken down into short, easy chapters which can be referenced easily if and when necessary:
Section 1: Basic information about TS, OCD and Associated disorders.
Section 2: Understanding the impact of TS and OCD
Section 3: Checklists for Parents
Section 4: Checklists for Teachers
Section 5: Other helpful Checklists for Parents & Teachers
Appendix: Real-life Scenarios of: Motor & Vocal tics, OCD & Anxiety, Dysgraphia, Behaviour Plans, Executive Dysfunction, Misc)
It is aimed for people living in the USA but the information surrounding TS and the associated orders is still very valuable and the author herself shares a lot of insight and understanding to this complex syndrome. Highly recommended if you're trying to get an understanding and don't know where to start.

A reviewer who reviews reviews before buying!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Co-occurring conditions and help
I bought this whilst trying to understand my daughter's behaviours (if you see my other reviews, you might get an idea of it all).
She has OCD and ticks (no pun intended) all the boxes for Tourettes. However, the causes for her tics is actually due to a condition called PANS - an autoimmune disorder affecting her basal ganglia, and not Tourettes. At the time, we didn't know this. If you've not heard of it, looking up the PANS / PANDAS UK charity. Amazing people.
So anyway, I bought this book to help us understand, care for her and support her the best way we could whilst banging our head against the wall with our local CAMHS who were next to useless with her therapy. It's so important to be informed, and even though she has a tic disorder, with medication and therapy, plus this book (and she's now with a brilliant psychiatrist and immunologist), we're definitely better at understanding. Shout out to OCD UK, OCD Action, and Tourettes Action as well - reach out to them if you have not already.

For a mom with a son newly diagnosed with Tourette’s this book is great! It has so much information and it’s easy to understand. I’d recommend it for sure

useful and concise. Helpful for anyone with a newly diagnosed child, and for anyone realising that they have had tourettes all their lives but never understood the condition in it's entirety.
