Tamsin Embleton is an attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist based in London. She trained at the Bowlby Centre, the Anna Freud Centre, Regent’s University and the Adult Attachment Institute. Tamsin works therapeutically with musicians and music industry professionals and she consults for a variety of entertainment companies and charities. Tamsin has been researching the psychological impact of touring since 2016.

In 2018, Tamsin founded the Music Industry Therapist Collective (MITC), a global group of specialist health clinicians who combine their unique lived experience of working in the music business with their clinical expertise as health professionals. MITC are based across the UK, the US and they are venturing out in to the EU. They have delivered workshops to Warner Music Group, Atlantic Records, Music Norway and Kobalt, among others. In 2023, MITC are hosting panels and workshops at South by Southwest, the International Live Music Conference and the Great Escape festival.

Previously, Tamsin worked as a booker for the Mean Fiddler Group, Killer B Music, Standon Calling Festival and Metropolis Studios. She has also worked in artist and tour management and for the PRS Foundation as a grants advisor.

This book is truly an incredible resource for touring musicians, their crew members, and other professionals who work with them or other touring artists. It's very comprehensive & includes helpful information for addressing every type of psychological or physical ailment a musician may experience, while also focusing on promoting healthy behaviors as well. It's well organized into various sections that make finding a specific topic that much easier. Also, the sheer volume of interviews with so many recognizable names in the industry - & the expert-like weaving of the information gleaned from those interviews into the text - makes the book so very engaging to read. Touring and Mental Health may be the most important book for musicians to hit the shelf in quite some time. It details the impact of touring on the mental lives of all involved, not just musicians but crew, spouse and families. Its also a wake-up call for anyone in the music business to understand the emotional reality of this unique occupational experience called touring. It’s edited by psychotherapist and ex-music industry booker Tamsin Embleton, who also contributes several chapters alongside a carefully curated selection of experienced music and mental health professionals. These include psychologist Dr. Dianna Kenny, who defines a broader definition of music performance anxiety and why the term "stage fright" minimizes the negative impact of this pervasive condition. Dr. Lou Cox, celebrated vocal and performance coach describes what makes bands succeed and fail--and what to do about it. CeCe Sammy (American Idol, The Voice), personal trainer to the likes of Coldplay Dan Portanier, talks about healing the mind and body and psychologist and stress researcher Dr. Susan Raeburn details the effects of stress and general anxiety on the everyday lives of musicians.

Beside being "must reading" for anyone in the industry, this book can function as a reference resource for everything from disordered eating patterns, post-tour depression and maintaining long distance relationships to mental health crisis management, coping with the legacy of trauma, and emotional regulation.

Artists who are vulnerable to psychological difficulty are often drawn to performance for the relief it offers, but statistics from a Help Musicians UK-commissioned survey reported that over 70% of musicians experienced incidences of anxiety and/or panic attacks and 68% of respondents experienced incidences of depression. Over half felt it was difficult to find help and nearly 55% felt that there were “gaps in the provision of available help”. Examples include artists Kanye West and Selena Gomez, James Blake and Zayn Malik who describe battling burnout, exhaustion and performance anxiety. These issues are not only encountered by platinum-sellers — and they’re not only encountered by artists. They impact artists and touring crew at all levels and the industry has begun to open up discussions about such difficulties. But more awareness is essential and Touring and Mental Health is the place to start.

This book is a really broad over view of a lot of things you should have at least a passing knowledge of if you’re in the music industry or someone you love is. It covers a lot of basic concepts as well as some really deep stuff. There is something for everyone here. As an older guy who worked as a touring musician and singer for many years all over the world this didn’t exist when I was more firmly in the game as a young man. I almost lost my life out there and no one really wanted to speak to me about it. Now I work full time as a life coach speaking primarily to those who work on the road and their families. It’s a life of love. I’ve always done what I wanted and now is no exception. This book defines the parameters that be and lets you know if you’re on the right track or not.

Tamsin Embleton has brought together a multi-disciplinary team of experts to address a huge gap in available resources for the music industry. As the medical director of the Musicians’ Clinics of Canada, I have cared for thousands of musicians for almost 40 years bearing witness to the enormous toll on health and well-being from the toxic stress of touring in the music industry. Part I introduces the reader gently to cover the necessary background information about mental health in the touring music industry. Part II dives into the intricacies of professional and personal relationships while on tour exploring conflicts and resolution of difficulties encountered. Part V covers topics on general health from vocal, hearing, and sexual health as well as nutrition and sleep. Part VI gives the reader an excellent overview of self care strategies, preparation for, and recovery from performance stress. This includes movement and breath work, meditation, and peak performance. The contributions from these experts will increase awareness of essential and potentially life saving information for touring performing artists presented in a professionally written and accessible format.
