I dragged my almost 30 year old Schwinn Sierra out of storage with the thoughts of getting it usable again. It had been stored for well over 15 years and was in sorry but salvageable shape. I decided a totally new drive-train was the best way to go. So, I chose this rear derailleur, FD-TX50 front derailleur, MF-TZ20 6 speed freewheel, FC-M171 crank set, CN-HG50 chain and finished the whole thing up with a set of SL-TX30 shifters. I just got everything installed and adjusted and its working like a Swiss watch. Indexed shifting on a 30 year old bike, how cool is that? LOL

I bought everything from Amazon and for a little over $90 in parts, plus a new set of tires and brake pads and lots of elbow grease, I have a perfectly riding and amazing looking vintage 1984 Schwinn Sierra. I love it!

What a fun little project. Thank you, Amazon! Now I can't decide if I should keep it or sell it. :)

This is on my current Giant Cypress ST Cro-Moly hybrid. I love this thing--it seems that Shimano has derailleurs almost completely "sewed"--this is a shining example--a jewel of clever engineering and design! It works much better than anything else on any other bike I've owned in the past--even including the Deore!

Given that you have a cable puller (and, necessary cable cutters, etc.--all available conveniently and relatively inexpensive here)--and follow the guides built into the bike and derailleur (such guides may be hidden at certain viewing angles)--cabling and adjusting this is simple--the design is quite clever--it seems almost foolproof! As someone before indicated, you may easily repurchase it--if you damage it--or if you just want something new and shiny on your bike! (He, he!)

It's true--the housing and gears are tough ABS plastic--it can't be compared to a Campagnolo ("Campy"), or a better Shimano or SRAM--at least as far as weight and performance goes (not to mention prices). As far as being trouble-free, though, I'm quite certain that this is the best ticket for commuter and hybrid bikes (given sensible road conditions and environments)!

I, too, have noted the Tourney installed on discount box-store bikes--in my view, though, that only reinforces, even more strongly, the desirable trouble-free, virtual turn-key nature of the Tourney!

As so many have pointed out with other Tourney version posts, this version, and, some others, attach directly to a necessary hole in the rear fork. Other versions have a bracket which allows attaching around the rear hub spindle.

You now know all too well what I think! If you desire to upgrade or change your derailleur--I strongly recommend (and, commend!) the Tourney!--Certainly, this model!

I have no idea how this derailleur is getting such good reviews. Maybe my expectations are too high. I bought this to replace the derailleur on my son's bike, not realizing it was the exact model that failed. His bike was a big box store Schwinn, so it didn't surprise me that it had a weak derailleur that failed in less than a year. I jumped onto Amazon, and chose this based on it's good reviews. Opening the package, I find the same cheap plastic gears (that broke in the first place), and weak sheet metal gear arms that flex (which probably caused the gears to fail in the first place). What's worse, the design has changed slightly which required more cable length. After about an hours work, I managed to make adjustments, and get it installed. Hopefully it will last longer.

The derailleur is inexpensive, and works well. It's just cheaply made, and fragile. I should have spent a little more, and got something better. Two stars.

The picture and description both led me to believe this tourney was a close to exact match as the old Tourney TX50 which sported a medium size cage. The actual model that showed up to me in the mail is a long cage model and although it functions fine I was still very disappointed by the misleading description which clearly states this model is supposed to have a shorter derailleur cage.

The price point on this is really not so great as to keep you from spending a few extra bucks to get an unarguably better RD. You ought to only buy this as a direct replacement for an old rear derailleur that isn't worth the effort to upgrade. This was bought as a replacement for a bent derailleur on a cheap department store bike that wasn't worth putting much money into, and I would imagine if you're looking at this, you're in the same boat.

This Shimano rear deraileur was perfect for my mountain bike. Just what I expected from Shimano. This derailleur is compact and also provides precise and accurate chain movement. One downside was that it took a few hours for me to configure it with my shifter set but I eventually got the hang of it. It may also be because I am new to this whole repair process; I'm sure that all derailleurs are difficult to manage. If you are not good with tools or bikes, I would recommend taking it to a shop to get this put on.
