All Naked! shows people from all walks of life, young, old, different occupations, sizes, body types, just the kinds of people we see every day. It won a best book award in Belgium. In France, “the parents of the Atelier” lauded the book for its fight against stereotypes. It received some controversy, when Jean-Francois Cope, president of UMP (Union for a Popular Movement) panned it, finding it shocking and obscene, but it ranked first and second in sales on amazon.fr.
Despite the controversy, why not a book for kids that shows simple nudity in an everyday setting, namely people of all walks of life stripping off for a day at the beach? In fact, the book ends with a two-page spread that shows all the characters on the beach, preparing to get wet. I see no reason not to add it to the daily round of reading kids’ books to our own kids. For too many years, adults' fear of simple nudity has rubbed off on our children, making something natural and innocuous into something unnatural and obscene.
It’s high time that changed, don’t you think?
For what there is of it this would be a nice child's book that wouldn't be bad for an adult either…if you approve of non sexual mixed gender nudity.
