I had a good chuckle. "Colossal" really means COLOSSAL. I do not have a single glass in my entire home that is big enough to hold 1 of these cubes! A great size for adding objects/food to the ice. I made some with cranberries and a small spring of rosemary. The size will be great for using in a pitcher/punch bowl.

Nice heavy duty container. Very easy to fill. My Keurig dispenses super hot water in the exact amount needed to fill a cube to it's 'max' line. How's that for ease?

I run water over the ice to get it to a size i can use.

I was excited about these Colossal Cube ice makers when ordered for use with my Old Fashion cocktails. In short, they did not deliver as expected. The cube did not come out looking like the pictures. There were chunks of additional ice on some sides. Most important, they only fit in one cocktail glass I owned that is square in shape. Any round glasses you have will have to be extremely large for the cube to fit all they way to the bottom of the glass. Just stick with a smaller cube.

I have the sphere version of these and use it regularly but needed more molds for those occasional two-cocktail nights. Thought i'd switch it up and go with the cube instead, but unfortunately they are quite large and I have to shave the corners quite a bit to get them to fit in my glasses. They work well but gotta think the size could be an issue for some.

Excellent idea but execution could be better

The plastic bottom cracks very easily getting the large cubes out of it because they stick hard. So you'll need to run warm water.

That said, an ice cube this large lasts well over 12 hours in an insulated container. This means that stuff you put in there to keep cold will stay cold, and will not be diluted if it's several hours before you actually drink it.

Don't hesitate to buy these! They are great.... I must admit that I thought the cost was slightly crazy, but now I'm thinking about buying another set.

The spheres fit into more things than I thought they would: my double walled steel thermos, mugs, glasses, etc. The spheres last a long time, and don't displace as much liquid as I thought they would, yet drinks are kept ice cold.

Fill to the line (the one that is raised off the inside surface of the mold, not the etched oval curved one), insert the lid slowly, place in the freezer, and you'll have perfect spheres.

I've had no trouble getting the spheres out, and no cracking. I remove the molds from the freezer, and either leave them out on the counter for a few minutes, or run water around them (including on the top with the hole). The ice will come out easily.

Put the sphere in your glass before adding the liquid. They make quite the "plop" and a splash if you fill your glass before adding the sphere.

Fun (though very large) Ice Cube Molds

These are pretty much what you would expect: a fun, novel ice cube mold. I gave Tovolo's Spherical Ice Cube Molds a 5-star rating, but decided to give these a 3-star review for three reasons:

1) They are extremely large. Too large, in fact, to fit in any of my glassware. And, I don't have especially narrow glassware. Since buying these, I've mentioned this problem to a few other people I know who have the same product, and they all mentioned having the same frustration. This is all anecdotal, but it seems like it's a pretty common problem. They do fit into some wider plastic cups that I have, but if you're looking for novelty ice cubes, you're probably not intending to use them in plastic cups.

2) The mold itself is very bulky. These just take up a lot of room in my freezer. I don't have the largest freezer, so this might be less of a concern for some. Just be prepared to devote a significant amount of room to these. Somehow Tovolo's spherical molds seem much more space-efficient than these. The mold-to-cube size ratio is seems much larger for these square molds than for the spherical molds.

3) They don't freeze as well as the spherical molds. I can't understand why, but it's much harder to get a perfectly-formed square out of these than it is to get a perfectly-formed sphere out of Tovolo's spherical molds. These tend to come out of the mold with at least one corner having a much rougher, sometimes elevated, "freezer burned" look to them. I've tried experimenting with the amount of water used, the temperature of the water being used, and the orientation of the mold in the freezer. Nothing seems to make a significant difference. My spherical molds almost always produce near-perfect results. Not sure why these seems to have a harder time. I think it has something to do with the way the plug fits into the mold.

These are probably very small issues for most, and in all, they don't take that much away from the product. It's still a fun novelty item that I enjoy using on occasion. If I ever buy some wider-mouthed glassware, I expect that I will use these much more often.

Make sure you have a huge glass for these cubes - if you don't go for the Sphere ice molds from Tovolo

I bought both Tovolo colossal cube ice mold and the sphere ice molds. I really wanted to love these cube molds but the issue is the ice that is made from it is so large that hardly any glasses can be used with it. The sphere ice molds from Tovolo doesnt have that problem. Now the quality of the actual molds are top notch - the soft silicone top makes it incredibly easy to get the ice out once its frozen. Theres a little hole thats in the top of the mold that you use to fill it with water, it also will overflow if its too full when it freezes to preserve the shape and then when you want to get the ice out thats where you use hot water on it to loosen the mold. I literally only have 2 glasses that these ice cubes fit and thats why I gave it 3 stars - everything else is top notch!
