You know how you get this idea of wanting a Borg cube in your drink..without actually paying for a Borg cube ice cube tray? So I had one of those moments and got it in my head that what's BETTER than a lot of ice in a drink is one massive cube!
This does make big ice cubes but I am now a member of the "didn't read all the details and reviews club, just clicked buy" (I'm sure Amazon lovvvvvvves that club, the just click buy in the throes of giant ice cubes in your drink fantasies)
Anyways they are not perfect cubes.
Afterwards I read someone elses mention of this...nit picky much self? Yes but in case you were looking for super square cubes these aren't them. This aint them. This is not those? Er...whatever, you know what I mean.
The bottom of the tray actually has a bevel...perhaps to make the cubes easier to release...I dunno but it means it's not a cube it's a whatyamacallit shape.
It also takes a LONG time to freeze. This is okay, this doesn't ding any stars. This is just a fact of nature and physics and volume of waterin a standard freezer....it is worth noting though....
If you get this ice cube tray delivered in the afternoon and think "a ha, I'll finish the evening with some Maker's Mark and a giant ice cube that I will pretend is a Borg cube and all will be right in the world.....
Except, it won't be frozen by then...I'm not talking like 6 hours later, I mean I got it in the afternoon, immediately washed and rinsed and close to midnight the cubes were pretty frozen (frozen enough to use but with pockets of un-frozen water) Overnight freezing is a must so you don't sook over your whiskey or iced coffee or whatevers.
As I mentioned, that's just personal experience and nothing to ding a star over.
The tray does smell....it's weird...I'll see how it does long term but straight away even after washing and rinsing in vinegar it has a weird smell and if you are sensitive to things like that it may be a deal breaker.
The tray is flexible enough to pop the cubes out pretty easily! Yay!
It's also flexible enough the inner sides of the cubes will be a bit deformed if your freezer is un-level or if your tray gets set in there crooked etc....
I guess what I'm saying is this tray is high maintenance.... Also, again this is just the nature of water freezing I guess but the tops don't freeze level...they are quite un-even....no biggy but since the bottom is beveled, the sides deformed and the top is un-even...it's not a "CUBE" in the sense of a real cube...though it is a cube of ice... I am including photos of the ice straight out of the tray so you can see for yourself. I'm nICE like that...bwa ha
But...it makes a big azz cube. Which is fun.
I will confess that after using it a few times I wondered why I didn't just get the Borg cube maker...I mean I expect that to be high maintenance....
Anyways, fun idea.....I guess in practice I'm not sure it was worth the little bit of extra expense, time and hassle for getting a larger cube....if that makes sense.
It does look cool once immersed in your beverage though.

Also showed a standard cube (in the sense of it being from a regular tray not that it's a true cube) for scale.
I love the size and shape. The only con is that it is a little difficult to get the cubes out of the trays.
However, just past the one year mark, I noticed that the ice cubes started tasting very funny. And I do mean noticeable, and not pleasant. I used filtered water, so I knew it wasn't the water.
My boyfriend works with all kinds of plastics and silicone, and upon tasting, he said that it tasted like the plastic was leaching chemicals into the water/ice and advised me to toss them immediately.
So, at $8.50 each for 1 year durability, these trays get downgraded from 4 stars to 2 stars.
Remember when things used to last longer than a year?
Others are having issues with white stuff in their water.... I only use filtered water (PUR which is a 2 stage filter) for my coffee and ice. I haven't seen a problem, nor have I noticed a bad taste or an odor. The only thing I have noticed is that it's a bit difficult to remove the cubes from the tray. I twist the tray, then push from the bottom, and roll back the sides of the tray around the cube. I just ordered two more trays. I also have the Tovolo large spheres. These trays are a lot less hassle than the spheres, and the cubes fit into many more containers, glasses, etc. These are much easier to use overall.
These trays are BPA free, FYI.
**** Update **** I find that I'm only using these cubes... for everything. I also use them at night in double walled plastic tumblers, and my drink is still reasonably cool hours later. I'm tossing all my other ice cube trays. ****
**** Update **** I noticed that one of my trays developed an odor after a while (months of use). I filled it the tray with a vinegar and water (well diluted) solution, let it soak for 5 minutes, rinsed, let it dry, and the odor was gone. The packaging says to wash with vinegar and water periodically, and I can see why. Still my favorite ice cube trays. Also, I sometimes half fill a few of the spaces to allow for a smaller cube when I want it. Works great.
